Convert Pbps to Tbps

Content last reviewed:

1 Pbps is 1,000 Tbps, because the prefix peta is a thousand times tera, so you multiply petabits by a thousand. Type a speed and the converter shows the result straight away: the 2025 record of 1.02 Pbps is 1,020 Tbps.

How many Tbps is 1 Pbps?

One petabit per second is 1,000 Tbps. Peta and tera are neighbouring SI prefixes: peta means 1015 and tera 1012[1], so you multiply petabits by a thousand, which moves the decimal point three places to the right: Tbps = Pbps × 1,000.

Here is that conversion on a 2025 record. A team led by Japan's NICT institute sent 1.02 Pbps over 1,808 km of fibre with 19 cores[2], which is 1,020 Tbps. For the other direction, from terabits to petabits, use the Tbps to Pbps converter.

What is a petabit per second, and what is a terabit per second?

A petabit per second (Pbps, Pb/s or Pbit/s) is a quadrillion bits sent in one second, and a terabit per second (Tbps) is a trillion[1]. Both units count bits, so only the prefix differs. Home broadband is sold in megabits, carrier and university networks run in gigabits and terabits, and petabits show up today in laboratory records.

A petabit is easy to confuse with a petabyte, and a byte has eight bits[3]. So 1 Pbps is 125 terabytes per second, and the data transfer rate converter turns bits into bytes.

The rows cover speeds from 0.0004 to 100 Pbps. The results are exact, because the factor is exactly a thousand.

The 0.0004, 0.0008 and 0.032 Pbps rows are Internet2 transponder speeds and the capacity of one optical segment[4], and 0.43 and 1.02 Pbps are the 2025 NICT records[5][2].

How does a petabit compare with Internet2?

Internet2 runs the US national research and education backbone that interconnects 37 state and regional networks. Its Next Generation Infrastructure, completed in January 2022, supports up to 32 terabits per segment on the optical layer, with transponders in steps of 400 to 800 gigabits per second[4]. Type 32 into the Tbps to Pbps converter and you get 0.032 Pbps.

The 1.02 Pbps record is therefore about 32 times the capacity of one such segment. The 430 Tb/s record in standard-compliant fibre came from NICT and eleven partners, among them Aston University in the UK, Macquarie University and Modular Photonics in Australia, and Nokia Bell Labs in the USA[5].

Where do speeds measured in petabits appear today?

The table lists four speeds from the smallest up: two from the Internet2 network and two laboratory records. Each row names its source and year, because at this scale a figure without a date soon goes out of date.
Speed in PbpsWhere the speed comes fromSame in Tbps
0.0008 PbpsFastest Internet2 transponder step (2022)0.8 Tbps

NICT's 430 Tb/s beat its own 402 Tb/s result from 2024[5]. Both records were set in the laboratory, while the Internet2 figures describe a network in service[4].

Which formats does this converter accept?

The field accepts and converts every one of these entries, so you do not need to tidy anything up before pasting. The table shows what the converter does with each of them, and the converter worked out the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsNote
11,000 TbpsWe read a bare number as petabits per second, because that is the field's label.
1.021,020 TbpsThe point is the decimal separator, and we read it that way.
1,0201,020,000 TbpsA comma followed by three digits reads as a thousands separator, so the field counts 1,020 petabits per second. The hint under the field says: Read as 1020. If you meant 1.02, type 1.02.
1.5001,500 TbpsA single point is always the decimal separator, so the field counts one and a half petabits per second. The hint under the field says: Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.
1.02 petabits per second1,020 TbpsThe unit written out in words is recognized too, and the field takes the number in front of it.
430 Tbps430 TbpsTerabits become petabits, so the field shows 0.43 and a line under it explains the change.
125 TB/s1,000 TbpsTerabytes per second are multiplied by eight, because a byte has eight bits, so the field shows 1 and a line under it explains the change.

How to compare a lab record with a real network

Records are quoted in petabits, networks in gigabits and terabits. These steps bring both numbers into one unit.

  1. Type the record

Type 1.02 into the Petabits/s field or paste 1.02 Pbps. The converter shows 1,020 Tbps in the Terabits/s field.
  2. Bring the network into terabits

A 32 Tbps segment stays as it is, and an 800 Gbps transponder is 0.8 Tbps. The Gbps to Tbps converter turns gigabits into terabits.
  3. Divide one number by the other

1,020 Tbps divided by 32 Tbps is about 32, and divided by 0.8 Tbps it is 1,275. That is how many segments or transponders the record would fill.
  4. Convert back

The Swap order button opens the Tbps to Pbps converter with the result, so one click takes you from 1,020 Tbps back to 1.02 Pbps.

Frequently asked questions about Pbps and Tbps

How many GB is a petabit?

A petabit is a million gigabits, which is 125,000 gigabytes, because a byte has eight bits[3]. A speed of 1 Pbps is therefore 1,000,000 Gbps, or 125,000 GB every second.

Is 1 Pbps the same as 1 PB/s?

No. A lowercase b stands for bits and a capital B for bytes, so 1 PB/s is eight times as much as 1 Pbps. Paste 125 TB/s into the Petabits/s field and the converter records it as 1 Pbps.
