Convert yottabytes to zettabytes
1 YB is 1,024 ZB in the binary standard or 1,000 ZB in the decimal one. Enter a number of yottabytes and the converter gives it in zettabytes in the standard you pick with the switch below the fields.
How many zettabytes are in 1 YB?
1 YB is 1,000 ZB in the SI, while the yobibyte (YiB), the yottabyte counted in powers of two, is 1,024 zebibytes (ZiB)[1]. The YB symbol can therefore stand for two values, and the switch below the fields picks one of them.
The gap between the standards grows with every step: 2.4% at the kilobyte, almost 21% at the yottabyte and nearly 27% at the quettabyte[1]. Paste 1 YiB into the field, choose Decimal (1000), and the converter shows 1,208.9258 ZB.
How do you convert yottabytes to zettabytes? Formula and Excel
Multiply the number of yottabytes by one of two multipliers:
- binary: ZB = YB × 1,024,
- decimal: ZB = YB × 1,000.
A quarter of a yottabyte is therefore 256 ZB in binary or 250 ZB in decimal.
In Excel, =CONVERT(A2,"Ybyte","Zbyte") gives the decimal result and =CONVERT(A2,"Yibyte","Zibyte") the binary one[2]. The ZB to YB converter turns zettabytes back into yottabytes, and the ZB to EB converter goes one step further down.
How many zettabytes is a given number of yottabytes?
| Yottabytes | Binary (1024) | Decimal (1000) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.001 YB | 1.024 ZB | 1 ZB |
| 0.01 YB | 10.24 ZB | 10 ZB |
| 0.1 YB | 102.4 ZB | 100 ZB |
| 0.25 YB | 256 ZB | 250 ZB |
| 0.5 YB | 512 ZB | 500 ZB |
| 1 YB | 1,024 ZB | 1,000 ZB |
| 1.5 YB | 1,536 ZB | 1,500 ZB |
| 2 YB | 2,048 ZB | 2,000 ZB |
| 4 YB | 4,096 ZB | 4,000 ZB |
| 5 YB | 5,120 ZB | 5,000 ZB |
| 8 YB | 8,192 ZB | 8,000 ZB |
| 10 YB | 10,240 ZB | 10,000 ZB |
| 16 YB | 16,384 ZB | 16,000 ZB |
| 50 YB | 51,200 ZB | 50,000 ZB |
| 64 YB | 65,536 ZB | 64,000 ZB |
| 100 YB | 102,400 ZB | 100,000 ZB |
Which number formats does this converter accept?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 | 1536 ZB | The dot is a decimal point, so the field holds one and a half yottabytes. |
| 1.500 | 1536 ZB | A single dot is always read as a decimal point, so we count one and a half yottabytes. A hint appears below the field, and you can type fifteen hundred yottabytes as 1500 or 1,500. |
| 2YB | 2048 ZB | A unit stuck to the number without a space matches the field's unit, so you don't need to delete it. |
| 2 yottabytes | 2048 ZB | The full unit name is recognised too, in the singular or the plural. |
| 1 YiB | 1024 ZB | A yobibyte is always 2⁸⁰ bytes, so in the Decimal (1000) standard the same entry gives 1208.9258 ZB. |
| 5000 ZB | 5000 ZB | Zettabytes pasted into the yottabytes field are rewritten as 4.882813 YB, so the result comes back to the same number. |
| 1 RB | 1048576 ZB | A ronnabyte, the step above the yottabyte, is rewritten as 1024 YB, and a note below the field says so. |
| 1e-3 | 1.024 ZB | Scientific notation is read directly: 1e-3 is a thousandth of a yottabyte. |
| 3/4 | 768 ZB | A fraction is divided straight away, so the field holds three quarters of a yottabyte. |
| ½ | 512 ZB | A ½ character copied from text is read as half a yottabyte. |
Which standard should you pick?
You set the standard with the Unit standard switch below the fields. The right choice depends on where the yottabyte figure comes from.
A storage format limit
Pick Binary (1024). Limits of storage formats come from powers of two, so they are stated in YiB.A figure from a report or statistic
Pick Decimal (1000). Totals of data use SI prefixes, where a yottabyte is an even thousand zettabytes.A value given in YiB
Pick Binary (1024). YiB stands for yobibyte, and one yobibyte is exactly 1,024 ZiB.
Is a quadrillion bytes a yottabyte?
Not in English. A yottabyte is a septillion bytes, 1024. In the short scale used in the US and the UK, a quadrillion is only 1015, so a quadrillion bytes is a petabyte. Most of continental Europe uses the long scale, where the word quadrillion, or its local form, does mean 1024[3].
So a German Quadrillion or a French quadrillion of bytes is a yottabyte. When you compare data figures across languages, check the power of ten rather than the word.

Frequently asked questions about yottabytes and zettabytes
Is the yottabyte the largest unit of data?
No. Since 2022 the SI also has the ronna and quetta prefixes, so the ronnabyte (RB) and the quettabyte (QB) sit above the yottabyte. The ZB to YB converter explains them.
How many bits are in a yottabyte?
A byte has eight bits, so a yottabyte holds 8,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bits and a yobibyte 9,671,406,556,917,033,397,649,408 bits.
