Enter the number of teaspoons from your recipe and read how many tablespoons that makes. Three teaspoons make one tablespoon, so 8 tsp come to two and two thirds tablespoons. The table also gives the answer in a form you can scoop: two tablespoons and two teaspoons.

How many tablespoons is a given number of teaspoons?

Three teaspoons make one tablespoon. Eight teaspoons make two tablespoons and two teaspoons.

The teaspoon is the smallest spoon in a kitchen measuring set and holds 5 millilitres[1]. The tablespoon holds 15 millilitres, three times that portion, and that is where the divisor of three comes from.

US food labelling law puts both figures in writing: a teaspoon means 5 millilitres and a tablespoon means 15[2].

Australia divides the tablespoon by four. The teaspoon there holds the same 5 millilitres while the tablespoon holds 20[3], so the same number of teaspoons makes fewer tablespoons.

The Tablespoon type switch sits under the converter fields. It starts on the metric spoon, the one a British, Irish or European recipe means.

How do you convert teaspoons to tablespoons? The formula and the fraction

Divide the number of teaspoons by three.

The formula: tablespoons = teaspoons ÷ 3 for the metric and the US customary spoon. The Australian spoon divides by 4.

The answer often lands on a third or two thirds of a tablespoon, so the table gives the fraction next to the decimal.

One teaspoon is 0.3333 tablespoons, which is a third. Two teaspoons come to 0.6667 tablespoons, which is two thirds. Three teaspoons make exactly one tablespoon.

The converter field takes fractions straight from the recipe. Type 1/2 and you get 0.1667 tablespoons, which is a sixth. Type 1 1/2 with a space between the whole number and the fraction and you get exactly half a tablespoon. The dot and the comma are interchangeable: 2.5 and 2,5 give the same result.

The US teaspoon holds 4.92892159375 millilitres and is defined as one third of the US tablespoon[1], so the divisor stays the same as with the metric spoon.

The other direction is handled by the tablespoons to teaspoons converter. For the same portion in millilitres use the tablespoons to millilitres converter. A portion counted in teaspoons goes through the teaspoons to millilitres converter, and a dose printed in millilitres through the millilitres to teaspoons converter.

The letters in a recipe: lower-case t and capital T

A lower-case t stands for the teaspoon and a capital T for the tablespoon[3].

English recipes shorten the teaspoon to tsp, t, ts or tspn[1] and the tablespoon to tbsp, Tbsp, Tb or T[3]. The two portions differ by a factor of three, so where a recipe uses a single letter the case of that letter carries the whole difference.

Recipes translated from other languages bring their own pairs of abbreviations, and a Spanish cda sits next to a cdta the same way a T sits next to a t.

The table collects the names and abbreviations from the eight languages this site is published in.

How many tablespoons do a quarter to 75 teaspoons make?

Rows run from a quarter of a teaspoon to seventy-five teaspoons. The column for the division by three covers the metric and the US customary spoon, and the Australian column divides by four.

How many whole tablespoons come out of a given number of teaspoons?

The table splits the portion into whole tablespoons and the teaspoons left over, which is the pair of spoons you actually pick up.

Which number formats does this converter accept?

The table shows what the field does with the ways an amount usually reaches it from recipes, medicine leaflets and spreadsheets. The converter itself calculated every result.
What you typeWhat the converter showsNote
82.6667 tbspA plain number is read as teaspoons, because that’s what the field is labeled.
8 tsp2.6667 tbspThe tsp abbreviation from the recipe is skipped, so only the number counts.
8 teaspoons2.6667 tbspThe whole word is skipped the same way, so a recipe line needs no tidying.
1/20.1667 tbspA fraction with a slash is worked out for you, so half a teaspoon doesn’t need to become 0.5 first.
3/40.25 tbspThree quarters of a teaspoon is exactly a quarter of a tablespoon.
1 1/20.5 tbspA mixed number from the recipe is read as one and a half teaspoons, which makes half a tablespoon.
1-1/20.5 tbspThe hyphen between the whole number and the fraction, common in US recipes, is read as a space.
1 1/40.4167 tbspThe quarter-teaspoon from a measuring set is added to the whole teaspoon.
2½0.8333 tbspThe ½ character copied from a recipe is added to the number in front of it.
2.50.8333 tbspThe period is your decimal point, and that’s exactly how we read it.
2,50.8333 tbspA comma with fewer than three digits after it is a decimal comma from a European recipe, so we read two and a half teaspoons.
1.5000.5 tbspA single period is always read as a decimal point, so the field takes one and a half teaspoons. A note under the field says: Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.
1,500500 tbspA comma followed by three digits groups thousands, so the field reads fifteen hundred teaspoons. A note under the field says: Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.
15 ml1 tbspMillilitres are turned into teaspoons by the field itself, so 15 ml comes to one tablespoon.

How do you measure a portion given in teaspoons?

The order to work in when a recipe gives more teaspoons than are comfortable to count out.

  1. Count how many whole tablespoons fit

Divide the number of teaspoons by three and take the whole part. Ten teaspoons give three full tablespoons.
  2. Make up the rest with the teaspoon

Subtract the teaspoons that went into the whole tablespoons. Ten teaspoons leave one behind, so the portion is three tablespoons and one teaspoon.
  3. Move the switch for an Australian recipe

Set the Australian spoon when the recipe comes from Australia. Ten teaspoons give two tablespoons and two teaspoons there, because one tablespoon holds four teaspoons[3].
  4. Level dry ingredients at the rim

The figures on this page describe a level spoon. A heaped teaspoon holds more than that, and how much more depends on how loose the ingredient is.

What should you measure a dose written in teaspoons with?

With the device that came in the box. The US medicines agency says so outright for paracetamol: a liquid dose is measured with the dosing device supplied with the product[5].

Cutlery varies in capacity. A 2023 paper in Frontiers in Public Health cites measurements of household teaspoons ranging from 2.5 to 7.3 millilitres. The same authors showed a calibrated medicine spoon to their participants, and acceptance of cutlery as a dosing aid then fell from 74 to 5 percent[6].

A pharmacy teaspoon is 5 millilitres and a tablespoon is 15, three times as much[2]. That is why leaflets give the dose in millilitres: one number then describes the same portion whatever measuring set a household owns.
