Convert exabytes to petabytes

Content last reviewed:

1 EB is 1,024 PB in the binary standard and 1,000 PB in the decimal one. Type a number of exabytes and the converter shows it in petabytes straight away. You pick the standard with the switch under the fields: binary matches what Windows reports, decimal matches data center announcements and spec sheets.

Binary (1024): what Windows and RAM use. Decimal (1000): what drive makers, macOS and search engines use.

How many petabytes are in an exabyte?

An exabyte holds 1,024 petabytes in the binary standard and 1,000 petabytes in the decimal one. Formally an exabyte is 1018 bytes, while the power-of-two version is called an exbibyte and has 260 bytes[1]. Windows counts in powers of two, even though it labels the result PB and EB[2].

The conversion is a single multiplication. Four exabytes are 4,096 PB in binary and 4,000 PB in decimal. In Excel, the CONVERT function does it with the units "Ebyte" and "Pbyte", or "Eibyte" and "Pibyte" for binary, as shown next to the PB to EB converter.

How much is an exabyte in TB, GB and bytes?

The table breaks one exabyte down into smaller units in both standards. Each step down multiplies by 1,024 or by 1,000.
1 EB isBinary (1024)Decimal (1000)
petabytes1,024 PB1,000 PB

bytes1,152,921,504,606,846,976 B1,000,000,000,000,000,000 B
Both columns follow from the definitions of the exabyte and the exbibyte[1]. The PB to TB converter takes petabytes down to terabytes, and the data unit converter down to gigabytes.

How many petabytes is a given number of exabytes?

The table gives both standards side by side. The binary column matches Windows, and the decimal one matches data center announcements.

How much data is an exabyte in practice?

An exabyte is roughly what the Large Hadron Collider at CERN gathered in more than fifteen years of running. In December 2025 CERN announced that the first exabyte of experimental data from the LHC, a million terabytes, had reached its storage system[3]. In decimal that is 1,000 PB; Windows would show the same amount as about 888 PB.

National mobile networks now move data on the same scale. Ofcom's Connected Nations report, published in November 2025, puts UK mobile data use at over 1.2 billion gigabytes each month, or 1,257 PB[4]. That is about 1.26 EB a month: type 1.26 with the Decimal (1000) setting and the converter shows 1,260 PB.

When you compare two figures in exabytes, check that both use the same standard. The standards are only 2.4% apart for this pair, but with exabytes that means tens of petabytes.

Which number formats does this converter accept?

Paste the number the way you have it: with a decimal point, with commas between thousands or together with the unit. The field reads each of these formats and converts it by itself, and the table shows exactly what it does with each one. The converter calculated the results itself in the Binary (1024) setting.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
0.25256 PBThe point separates the decimal part, so we count a quarter of an exabyte
1,51536 PBA comma before a single digit can only be a decimal comma, as in European documents, so we read one and a half exabytes
1,5001,536,000 PBA comma before three digits is a thousands separator in English, so we count fifteen hundred exabytes. A hint appears under the field in case you meant 1.5.
1.5001536 PBA single point always counts as a decimal point, so we read one and a half exabytes. A hint appears under the field, and for fifteen hundred you type 1500 or 1,500.
10,00010,240,000 PBThe comma groups the thousands, so the field holds ten thousand exabytes. A hint appears under the field in case you meant 10 exabytes.
½512 PBA ½ sign copied from text becomes half an exabyte
1e-31.024 PBScientific notation from a spreadsheet is read as it is: 1e-3 is a thousandth of an exabyte
2 Exabytes2048 PBThe field's own unit written as a word is skipped, and only the number stays
512 PB512 PBPetabytes pasted into the exabyte field are written as 0.5 EB, with a note under the field, so the result comes back as the same 512 PB
Capacity: 1 EB1024 PBA line copied from an announcement or spec sheet works too, because we take the number right before the unit

Frequently asked questions about exabytes and petabytes

Is an exabyte a quintillion bytes?

Yes. In English 1018 is a quintillion, so a decimal exabyte holds a quintillion bytes. Watch out when reading European sources: in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Czech the same number is called a trillion, while the English trillion is only 1012[5].
