Convert gallons to US cups

Content last reviewed:

Type a number of gallons and the cup figure appears as you type. A US gallon holds exactly sixteen cups, so a milk jug marked 1 US gal gives 16 cups. The dry gallon gives 18.6184 cups and the imperial one 19.2152.

How many cups are in a gallon?

A US gallon holds sixteen cups. To turn gallons into cups, multiply the number by sixteen: cups = gallons × 16. Five gallons give 80 cups, and two gallons give 32.

That sixteen follows straight from the way both measures are defined. NIST tables describe the cup as eight fluid ounces and the gallon as 128 fluid ounces[1], so the cup is a sixteenth of the gallon. For the same reason, a half, a quarter and an eighth of a gallon give whole numbers of cups. Half a gallon is eight cups. A quarter gallon gives four.

The other two gallons carry figures of their own, because both are larger than the American one. The US dry gallon gives 18.6184 cups and the imperial gallon 19.2152 cups. You pick the measure with the Gallon type switch under the fields, and the US gallon is set by default. The same volume in litres appears in the gallons to litres converter.

What is a gallon and what is a cup?

A cup is a kitchen measure and you fill it with a measuring cup of fixed capacity. The US cup holds 236.5882365 millilitres, which is exactly eight fluid ounces[1], and that is what the word cup means in an American recipe.

In the United States the gallon gives the size of milk jugs, fuel cans and car tanks. The American gallon holds exactly 231 cubic inches, or 3.785411784 litres. Two other gallons exist. The British one, called imperial, holds 4.54609 litres. The US dry gallon holds 268.8025 cubic inches, or 4.40488 litres, which is exactly an eighth of the bushel that NIST tables put at 2150.42 cubic inches[1]. It measured grain in the United States until the 1990s and is no longer used[2].

The British side works differently. An imperial culinary measuring cup was never established[3], so an imperial volume converts into US cups or millilitres. On 30 September 1995 the UK replaced the gallon with the litre as the primary unit of measure in trade, and miles per imperial gallon remain the primary fuel-economy unit there[2]. A quarter of either gallon is a quart, which the gallons to quarts converter handles.

The series of US liquid measures

The division from the gallon downwards halves at every step as far as the cup and the gill. The last step differs: a fluid ounce is a quarter of a gill. Read the cup row both ways: a cup is eight fluid ounces and also half a pint.

Fluid ounce0.00781250.031250.06250.125129.57
The gill has a row of its own because the NIST table of liquid volume divides the pint into four gills and lists the cup separately, as eight fluid ounces[1]. That is why a gallon is 32 gills and 16 cups at once, and why one cup holds two gills. Quarts turn into gallons in the quarts to gallons converter.

Three gallons and the cup count in each

The table shows how the result changes once you move the Gallon type switch. The cup stays American in every row, because neither the imperial system nor the dry system has a measuring cup.

Imperial (UK)4.54609 l19.2152153.7216
The rows differ only in the size of the gallon. The imperial gallon is 20.1 percent larger than the US one and the dry gallon 16.4 percent larger, and the cup count grows by the same share.

Three cups and how many fit in a US gallon

The cup itself has three values, and that value sets whether a gallon holds sixteen measures or fifteen and a fraction.
CupCapacityPer US gallonUS fluid ounces
US customary236.5882365 ml168
US legal (labelling)240 ml15.77258.1154
Metric250 ml15.14168.4535
The metric cup of 250 millilitres is the measure of Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and the labelling cup of 240 millilitres is the figure written into American food-labelling law[3]. An imperial measuring cup was never established[3], so the table has three rows. Their capacities in millilitres go through the cups to ml converter.

Which number formats does this converter handle?

The field accepts each of these formats and converts it, so you don’t need to tidy a number before you paste it. The table shows what the converter does with each one, and the converter worked out the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.540 US cupThe point is the decimal separator, so this is two and a half gallons.
2,540 US cupA comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half.
1,50024000 US cupThree digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred gallons. A note under the field says: Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.
1 50024000 US cupA space between the thousands is skipped, so this is one thousand five hundred gallons as well.
3/412 US cupWe convert a fraction with a slash directly, so it doesn’t need to become 0.75 first.
1½24 US cupA ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it.
5 gal80 US cupA unit pasted along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone.

How do you convert gallons to cups?

The arithmetic is one multiplication, and the four steps cover fraction notation and the choice of gallon as well.

  1. Read the number of gallons from your source

On an American label it stands next to the abbreviation gal or the word gallon. A British source may add imperial or UK, and that means the gallon of 4.546 litres.
  2. Multiply that number by sixteen

Two gallons give 32 cups. Three gallons give 48 cups. Five gallons give 80 cups. The converter does the multiplication while you type, so the result is there without a button press.
  3. Enter a fraction the way your source writes it

The field takes slash notation, so 3 3/4 gallons give 60 cups and 4 7/8 gallons give 78 cups. Decimal notation works the same way, and a comma stands in for the point: 2.5 and 2,5 give the same answer.
  4. Change the gallon only when the source calls for it

The Gallon type switch sits under both columns. Leave the US gallon in place for American recipes, containers and fuel. Pick the imperial gallon for British figures, and the dry gallon only when the source says dry gallon. The Swap order button moves you to converting cups into gallons, Copy result puts the figure on the clipboard, and Clear all empties both fields.

How many cups of water are in a gallon?

The question about a gallon of water a day comes down to one figure: a US gallon is 16 cups, or 3.785 litres. The National Academies report of 11 February 2004 gives adequate intake levels for total water of 3.7 litres a day for men and 2.7 litres for women[4]. In kitchen measure that works out at 15.64 cups and 11.41 cups, so a gallon is close to the figure for men.

Both figures count water from all drinks and food, and about twenty percent of it comes from food[4]. Lawrence Appel, who chaired the panel, also said the report gives no rule of thumb on glasses of water per day, because other drinks and food supply water too[4].

Frequently asked questions about gallons and cups

How many tablespoons and teaspoons are in a gallon?

A US gallon holds 256 tablespoons or 768 teaspoons. A cup is eight fluid ounces and a tablespoon is half a fluid ounce and three teaspoons[1], so a cup takes sixteen tablespoons and a gallon sixteen cups.

How many half-litre bottles does a gallon fill?

7.5708 bottles. A US gallon holds 3.785411784 litres, so it fills seven bottles and more than half of an eighth. One half-litre bottle is 2.1134 US cups.

How many US cups are in five imperial gallons?

96.076 cups, because five imperial gallons hold 22.73 litres. Type 5 in the converter and set the Gallon type switch to UK / Imperial.

How many 12 oz cups come out of five gallons?

53.33 cups. Five gallons are 80 US cups and 640 fluid ounces, and a 12-ounce cup holds one and a half US cups. With a 16-ounce cup, which is two US cups, the same five gallons cover 40 servings.

How much milk does an American pupil get in a week?

Five cups, one per day — that is what the school lunch regulation requires, in every grade group[5]. One gallon covers a little over three such weeks, because it holds sixteen cups.

Why do the converter fields say US gal and US cup?

Because both measures have several values and the qualifier shows which one is meant. US gal is the American gallon of 3.785 litres, and US cup is the American measuring cup of 236.59 millilitres. Move the Gallon type switch and the label on the gallon field changes to US dry gal or UK gal.
