Convert gallons to pints

Content last reviewed:

A gallon holds eight pints, so you multiply the number of gallons by eight: 5 US gal is 40 pints. The same eight applies to the US gallon and the imperial gallon, as long as the pint comes from the same country as the gallon. The Gallon type and Pint type selectors also handle mixed systems, such as US gallons in imperial pints.

How many pints are in a gallon?

There are eight pints in a gallon. To convert, you multiply the number of gallons by eight: pints = gallons × 8. Two gallons make 16 pints, five gallons make 40 pints, and twelve gallons make 96 pints.

The eight comes from two smaller steps. A gallon splits into four quarts, and each quart splits into two pints. The US tables of measure put it on a single line, “4 quarts = 1 gallon = 231 cubic inches = 8 pints”, and the British tables state “8 pints = 1 gallon” separately[1]. You can check each step on its own with the gallons to quarts converter and the quarts to pints converter.

The eight holds when the pint comes from the same system as the gallon. The converter starts with the US gallon and the US liquid pint. If your gallons come from an American recipe and you pour into British pint glasses, set Pint type to Imperial (UK), and 1 US gal becomes 6.6614 pints. The other way round, an imperial gallon gives 9.6076 US pints. If you need the answer the other way round, use the pints to gallons converter; the Swap order button takes both selector settings there with it.

What is a gallon, and what is a pint?

The US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters[1]. It is the gallon on American gas pumps, milk jugs and paint cans. The imperial gallon used in the UK is larger, at 4.54609 liters, and it was defined as the volume of ten pounds of water[2]. The gallons to liters converter handles both.

A pint is an eighth of a gallon. The US liquid pint holds 16 US fluid ounces, or 473.18 milliliters. The imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces, or 568.26 milliliters[1]. The imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller than the American one, but the British pint has four more of them, so it ends up about a fifth larger. The pints to ml converter gives the exact milliliters for each pint.

The difference shows in the old rhyme “a pint’s a pound the world around”. A US pint of water weighs about 1.043 pounds, which is close enough for the saying[2]. An imperial pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter, because the imperial gallon was built on ten pounds of water and a pint is an eighth of it.

How many pints are in a keg or a cask?

US federal rules define a barrel of beer as 31 US gallons[3] and allow kegs rated at a half, a third, a quarter, a sixth and an eighth of it[4]. British casks for cask ale are counted in imperial gallons, so their pints are imperial pints[5].

These are the rated capacities. A cask ale firkin also holds sediment and finings, so the number of pints a pub can pour from it is lower than 72[5].

The gallon and the pint in three systems

Each system has its own gallon and its own pint. The sizes differ, but the ratio between the two is eight in every row.

Imperial (UK)4.546 L568.26 mL8

The converter works from these sizes whenever you pick a gallon and a pint from different systems in the selectors.

Which number formats does this converter handle?

The field accepts each of these formats and converts it, so you don’t need to tidy a number before you paste it. The table shows what the converter does with each one, and the converter worked out the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.520 US ptThe point is the decimal separator, so two and a half gallons gives 20 pints.
2,520 US ptA comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half.
1,50012000 US ptThree digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred gallons. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.
3/46 US ptWe convert a fraction with a slash directly, and three quarters of a gallon is six pints.
1½12 US ptA ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it.
5 gal40 US ptA unit pasted along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone.

Where are gallons and pints still in use?

In the United States both units are part of everyday shopping. The model packaging regulation lists milk bottles in five sizes, 1/2 pt, 1 pt, 1 qt, 1/2 gal and 1 gal[6], so the whole range runs from a single cup of milk to eight pints. The same rule lets a carton of ice cream say 1/2 gal instead of 64 fl oz.

In the United Kingdom trade has moved to metric units, but the pint survives in three places: draught beer, cider, and milk in returnable bottles[7]. A four-pint bottle of milk is half an imperial gallon, or 2.27 liters.

Canada defines its gallon the same way as the UK, at 4.54609 liters, and splits it into eight pints[8]. A Canadian gallon of 4.55 liters and an American gallon of 3.79 liters both hold eight pints, but the Canadian pints are the larger ones.

Frequently asked questions about gallons and pints

How many half pints are in a gallon?

Sixteen. A half pint is half of a pint and a gallon has eight pints, so there are twice as many half pints. A US half pint holds 236.59 milliliters and an imperial half pint 284.13 milliliters.

How many fluid ounces are in a gallon?

A US gallon holds 128 US fluid ounces and an imperial gallon holds 160 imperial fluid ounces[1]. Both numbers are eight pints multiplied by the ounces in each pint: 16 in the US and 20 in the UK.

Is a gallon of ice cream the same as eight pints?

Yes. Ice cream is sold by volume, not by weight, so a gallon tub holds the same eight pints as a gallon of milk or water. Only the weight changes from one product to another.

How do I enter 2 gallons and 3 pints?

Type it as a mixed number: 2 3/8. A pint is an eighth of a gallon, so three pints are 3/8, and the converter shows 19 pints. The field reads the whole number and the fraction after the space as one value.

Do pt and gal always mean pint and gallon?

In a recipe or on a label, yes. In typography, though, pt stands for the point, the unit of font size that the pt to px converter handles. Next to a volume, pt always means a pint.
