Convert pints to gallons
A pint is one eighth of a gallon, so you divide the number of pints by eight: 16 US pt is 2 gallons, and 4 pints make half a gallon. The same rule works for US and imperial measure, and the Pint type and Gallon type selectors also turn imperial pints into US gallons. Type the number of pints and the gallons appear as you type.
How many gallons is a pint?
One pint is 0.125 gallons, which is one eighth. To convert, you divide the number of pints by eight: gallons = pints ÷ 8. Eight pints make one gallon, four pints make half a gallon, and two pints make a quarter of a gallon.
The eight comes from the way both units are built. A gallon holds four quarts and a quart holds two pints, so eight pints fill a gallon. The US tables of measure give this ratio for American liquid measure and for British measure alike[1]. The step in the middle is covered by the pints to quarts converter.
A whole number of pints never needs more than three decimal places in gallons: 3 pints are 0.375 gallons and 5 pints are 0.625. Half pints add a fourth place, which is why the converter shows four. For the opposite direction, use the gallons to pints converter.
What is a pint, and what is a gallon?
The pint is the measure a British pub pours its draught beer in. The imperial pint holds 568.26 milliliters and the US liquid pint 473.18 milliliters[1]. Its link to the gallon goes back a long way. Old apothecary prescriptions wrote the pint with the letter O, from the Latin octarius, meaning “an eighth”[2].
The gallon is eight pints of the same system. The US gallon holds 3.785 liters and the imperial gallon 4.546 liters[1]. To turn either one into liters, use the gallons to liters converter. For pints straight to liters, there is the pints to liters converter.

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 0.3125 US gal | The point is the decimal separator, so two and a half pints gives 0.3125 gallons. |
| 2,5 | 0.3125 US gal | A comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, and the result comes out the same. |
| 1,500 | 187.5 US gal | Three digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred pints. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5. |
| 3/4 | 0.0938 US gal | We convert a fraction with a slash ourselves and round the result to four decimal places. |
| 1½ | 0.1875 US gal | A ½ character copied from a recipe is added to the number in front of it, so we count one and a half pints. |
| 16 pt | 2 US gal | An abbreviation pasted along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone. |
How do you write the answer in gallons and pints?
A decimal answer such as 2.375 gallons is easy to turn into two units. The part before the point gives the full gallons. The part after it, multiplied by eight, gives the pints left over: 0.375 × 8 = 3. So 19 pints are 2 gallons and 3 pints.
You can also skip the decimals. Divide the pints by eight and read the remainder: eight goes into 19 twice, with 3 pints left.
This form helps when you pour a liquid into smaller containers. A cask holding 9 gallons of beer contains 72 pints, so after 50 pints have been poured, 22 pints are left, which is 2 gallons and 6 pints.

Frequently asked questions about pints and gallons
Is a pint half a liter?
No. A US pint holds 473.18 milliliters, a little less than half a liter, and an imperial pint holds 568.26 milliliters, clearly more. Two US pints come to 0.946 liters and two imperial pints to 1.137 liters.
Do eight pints of any liquid make a gallon?
Yes. Pints and gallons measure volume, so the liquid makes no difference: eight pints of water, milk, paint or blood all fill one gallon. The liquid only changes the weight, and a gallon of honey weighs far more than a gallon of water.
How many gallons is a quart?
A quarter of a gallon, or 0.25. A quart holds two pints and a gallon holds four quarts. The quarts to gallons converter handles that step on its own.
