Convert pints to quarts
A pint is half a quart, so you halve the number of pints. Enter a value and the result appears as you type: 5 pt gives two and a half quarts. An even pint count gives a whole number of quarts, and an odd one gives a result ending in a half, which a recipe writes as 2 1/2.
How many quarts are in a pint?
One pint is half a quart. You divide the number of pints by two: quarts = pints ÷ 2.
The divisor is the same in every system of measure. The American tables of units print “2 pints = 1 quart” under liquid measure[1]. How many millilitres the volume comes to depends on the type of pint, and the quart count stays the same.
For the other direction use the quarts to pints converter, and for the smaller measures in the same series the pints to cups converter.
What is a pint and what is a quart?
A pint is a measure of volume set out in ounces. A US liquid pint counts sixteen fluid ounces and holds 473.18 millilitres. An imperial pint counts twenty imperial fluid ounces[1] and holds 568.26 millilitres[2].
A quart is a doubled pint, and that is how the table of units writes it. A US liquid quart therefore holds 32 fluid ounces and an imperial quart 40 imperial fluid ounces[1]. A US liquid quart holds 946.35 millilitres. An imperial quart holds 1,136.52 millilitres.
Alongside this the American system has a separate series for goods sold by volume. A dry pint holds 550.61 millilitres. A dry quart holds 1,101.22 millilitres[1].
The English encyclopaedia entry sets out each relation on one line: “1 US liquid pint ≡ 1/8 US gallon ≡ 1/2 US liquid quart ≡ 473.176473 millilitres”[2]. Gallons are covered by the quarts to gallons converter.

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 1.25 qt | The point is the decimal separator, so this is two and a half pints. |
| 2,5 | 1.25 qt | A comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half. |
| 1,500 | 750 qt | Three digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred pints. The note “Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.” appears under the field. |
| 1.500 | 0.75 qt | A single point is always read as the decimal point, so this is one and a half pints. The note “Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.” appears under the field. |
| 1 500 | 750 qt | A space between the thousands is skipped, so this is one thousand five hundred pints as well. |
| 3/4 | 0.375 qt | We convert a fraction with a slash directly, so it doesn’t need to become 0.75 first. |
| 1½ | 0.75 qt | A ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it. |
| 2 pt | 1 qt | A unit pasted along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone. |

What does the word quart mean outside the United States?
The name comes from the Latin quartus, a quarter, by way of the French quart[5]. The size of the measure differs from one country to the next.
In the United Kingdom goods may be sold by the quart as long as the equivalent metric measure is given as well[5]. Draught beer and cider are a separate case: the order on intoxicating liquor names their quantities in pints[3].
In Canadian French, by federal law, the imperial quart is called pinte[5]. Under that law the French word therefore names a measure of 1,136.52 millilitres. That is twice the imperial pint.
The dry quart belongs to a separate American series and is defined as one thirty-second of a US bushel[5].
