Convert quarts to pints
One quart holds two pints, so you double the number of quarts. Enter a value and the result appears as you type: 5 qt gives ten pints. The same ratio applies to the US liquid, the US dry and the imperial measure, and only the number of millilitres differs.
How many pints are in a quart?
One quart holds two pints. You multiply the number of quarts by two: pints = quarts × 2.
The ratio is the same in all three systems where both names are still in use. The American tables of units print “2 pints = 1 quart” under liquid measure[1]. How many millilitres the volume comes to depends on the type of quart. The pint count stays the same.
For the other direction use the pints to quarts converter, and for the quart’s place among larger measures the quarts to gallons converter.
What is a quart and what is a pint?
The quart and the pint are two neighbouring measures in the same series. A quart takes up 57.75 cubic inches and a pint takes up 28.875 cubic inches[1]. The factor of two follows directly from those two figures.
The pint also has a second definition, written in ounces. A US liquid pint counts sixteen fluid ounces and an imperial pint counts twenty imperial fluid ounces[1]. A US quart therefore holds 32 fluid ounces and an imperial quart 40 imperial fluid ounces.
Alongside this the American system has a second series for goods sold by volume. A dry quart takes up 67.2006 cubic inches and a dry pint 33.6003 cubic inches[1]. The split into two halves stays the same there.
The English encyclopaedia entry states each relation on its own line: “1 US liquid pint ≡ 1/8 US gallon ≡ 1/2 US liquid quart ≡ 473.176473 millilitres” and “1 imperial pint ≡ 1/8 imperial gallon ≡ 1/2 imperial quart ≡ 568.26125 millilitres”[2]. Turning a pint into kitchen measures is the job of the pints to cups converter.

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 5 pt | The point is the decimal separator, so this is two and a half quarts. |
| 2,5 | 5 pt | A comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half. |
| 1,500 | 3000 pt | Three digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred quarts. The note “Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.” appears under the field. |
| 1.500 | 3 pt | A single point is always read as the decimal point, so this is one and a half quarts. The note “Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.” appears under the field. |
| 1 500 | 3000 pt | A space between the thousands is skipped, so this is one thousand five hundred quarts as well. |
| 3/4 | 1.5 pt | We convert a fraction with a slash directly, so it doesn’t need to become 0.75 first. |
| 1½ | 3 pt | A ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it. |
| 2 qt | 4 pt | A unit copied from a label along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone. |
How do you convert quarts to pints?
The whole calculation is a single multiplication. You will learn where to find the number of quarts and how to enter a fraction when a recipe writes it with a slash.
Read the number of quarts
On an American package it stands next to qt or next to the word quart.Multiply that number by two
Three quarts give six pints. Six quarts give twelve pints. A whole number of quarts always gives an even number of pints, because each quart equals exactly two.Enter a fraction of a quart the way the recipe writes it
A quarter of a quart entered as 1/4 gives half a pint.Take the result further
The Copy result button puts the number on the clipboard. The Swap order button turns the tool round to convert pints to quarts, and the Clear all button empties both fields.
When does an American package say pints and when quarts?
The volume on an American label follows the model packaging and labeling regulation, which states can adopt under their own weights and measures laws. For contents of one pint or more but less than one gallon the regulation asks for the largest whole unit. That can be quarts, quarts and pints together or pints on their own, with any remainder given in fluid ounces or as a fraction of the pint or quart[3].
This is where the shelf gets its wording. A carton holding two pints reads 1 qt, because the quart is the larger whole unit here. A carton holding one pint reads 1 pt. The regulation also allows two quarts to be declared as half a gallon[3].
Dairy products, ice cream and frozen desserts have a clause of their own. On a half-pint container the label may read 1/2 pt in place of eight fluid ounces, and on a half-gallon container 1/2 gal in place of sixty-four ounces[3].
