Convert quarts to liters

Content last reviewed:

A US liquid quart is 0.946 litres, an imperial quart 1.137 litres and a US dry quart 1.101 litres. Type a number of quarts and the result appears straight away. The Quart type switch under both fields picks one of those three measures. An oil capacity written as 5 US qt is 4.73 litres.

How many liters are in a quart?

One US liquid quart is 0.946 litres. Multiply the number of quarts by 0.946352946: litres = quarts × 0.946352946[1].

The answer moves with the measure in front of you. An imperial quart holds 1.1365225 litres, a fifth more than the US one. A US dry quart holds 1.101220942715 litres[1]. You pick the measure with the Quart type switch under the fields, and the multiplier follows it.

The other direction is in the liters to quarts converter, and where a quart sits among larger measures is in the quarts to gallons converter.

What is a quart, and what is a liter?

A quart is a quarter of a gallon, and the name carries the rule: it comes from the Latin quartus. The US liquid measure holds 57.75 cubic inches and splits into two pints, four cups and 32 fluid ounces. The imperial quart also splits into two pints, and each of those holds 20 imperial fluid ounces.

The litre has one definition today, and it is a cube ten centimetres on a side. The General Conference on Weights and Measures ruled in 1964 that the word litre may serve as a special name for the cubic decimetre[2]. The same resolution abrogated the earlier definition of the litre from 1901[2].

Both quarts are still legal measures on their own side of the Atlantic. In the United Kingdom goods may be sold by the quart as long as the metric equivalent is given[3], which is why an imperial quart mostly turns up in older recipes and in Canadian paperwork rather than on a shop shelf.

Engine oil capacities in quarts and liters

An owner's manual quotes the oil capacity in quarts, often to one decimal place. The last column says how many one-litre bottles cover that amount.

Which number formats does this converter handle?

The field accepts each of these formats and converts it, so you don’t need to tidy a number before you paste it. The table shows what the converter does with each one, and the converter worked out the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.52.3659 lThe point is the decimal separator, so this is two and a half quarts.
2,52.3659 lA comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half.
1,5001419.5294 lThree digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred quarts. The note “Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.” appears under the field.
1.5001.4195 lA single point is always read as the decimal point, so this is one and a half quarts. The note “Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.” appears under the field.
1 5001419.5294 lA space between the thousands is skipped, so this is one thousand five hundred quarts as well.
3/40.7098 lWe convert a fraction with a slash directly, so it doesn’t need to become 0.75 first.
1½1.4195 lA ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it.
5 qt4.7318 lA unit copied from an owner’s manual along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone.

How to convert quarts to liters

The arithmetic is a single multiplication. These steps show how to match the multiplier to the measure you are holding.

  1. Check where the number came from

A US owner's manual, an American product label and an American recipe all mean the liquid quart. An older British recipe and Canadian paperwork mean the imperial quart.
  2. Set that measure on the Quart type switch

The switch sits under both fields and carries three buttons: US liquid, UK / Imperial and US dry. The line beneath them gives the capacity of each quart, so the choice is visible before you type anything.
  3. Type the number of quarts

The result appears as you type. The field takes a point or a comma, and a slash fraction as well, so 5 1/2 gives the same answer as 5.5.
  4. Read the litres and take them further

The Copy result button puts the number on the clipboard. When you are buying, round up to a full pack: 5.7 quarts is 5.39 litres, which is six one-litre bottles.

Engine oil: quarts in the manual, litres on the shelf

American carmakers quote the oil capacity in quarts, while shops in Europe and Canada sell oil in one-, four- and five-litre packs. The conversion decides how many packs to carry to the till.

The common capacities sit in a narrow band. Four and a half quarts come to 4.26 litres. Five quarts give 4.73 litres, so a five-litre pack covers the change with about a quarter of a litre to spare. Six quarts reach 5.68 litres, and that pack needs a one-litre bottle alongside it.

The last of the oil goes in against the dipstick. The conversion answers how much to buy, and the dipstick says when to stop pouring.

The dry quart: berries and spray rates

The US system runs two separate ladders of volume, and the quart appears on both. The dry quart holds 1.101220942715 litres, 16 per cent more than the liquid one[1]. It measures what is sold by volume rather than by weight.

The fruit stand brings it into everyday use. Berries at a farm stand go in baskets of half a dry pint, one dry pint or one dry quart, and the dry quart is a little over a litre[4].

Farming uses the quart in another way, in spray rates per acre. One quart per acre works out at 2.3385 litres per hectare, since an acre is 0.4047 hectares.

Frequently asked questions about quarts and liters

How much bigger is an imperial quart than a US quart?

By 20.09 per cent. An imperial quart is 1.1365225 litres and a US liquid quart is 0.946352946 litres. Over ten quarts that comes to 1.9 litres, so the option on the Quart type switch changes the answer by an amount you can see.

How much smaller is a US quart than a litre?

By 54 millilitres, which is 5.4 per cent. Over one quart that is about three and a half tablespoons; over ten quarts it grows to 0.54 litres.

How many quarts of each kind does one liter fill?

One litre is 1.0567 US liquid quarts, 0.8799 imperial quarts and 0.9081 dry quarts. The liters to quarts converter does that direction in full.
