1 bbl, one barrel of crude oil, is 158.987 l. Type the number of barrels and the result in litres appears straight away. The Barrel type switch under the fields has four options, Oil, US beer, US liquids and UK beer, because each of these barrels holds a different amount.

An oil barrel holds 42 US gallons and is the barrel behind every crude price and production figure. A beer barrel holds 31 US gallons in the US and 36 imperial gallons in the UK. The barrel for liquids that many US state laws set holds 31½ US gallons.

How many litres are in a barrel?

An oil barrel holds 42 US gallons, which is exactly 158.987294928 litres. The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, or exactly 3.785411784 litres, so the barrel has an exact value in litres too[1]. The formula is litres = barrels × 158.987.

Beer is measured in barrels as well, and the numbers change. US federal rules define the beer barrel as 31 gallons, which is 117.35 litres[2]. The British beer barrel holds 36 imperial gallons, or 163.66 litres[3]. You pick each of them with the Barrel type switch, and the line under it reminds you how many gallons each one holds.

You may also come across 119.24 litres. That is the 31½-gallon barrel that many US state laws fix as the barrel for liquids[1]. Neither oil nor beer is traded in it, but some converters use it for a plain barrel, so the switch has it as US liquids.

If you are more at home with US units, a litre is a little more than a quart: 1.057 US quarts, as the quarts to litres converter shows. The reverse calculation runs in the litres to barrels converter. The same barrels in US or imperial gallons are in the barrels to gallons converter.

What is a barrel, and why 42 gallons?

A barrel is a unit of volume from the US customary system, written bbl. It is not part of the SI, yet crude prices on world exchanges are quoted in US dollars per barrel. It is built from gallons, so every barrel can also be written in gallons, and those you can turn into litres with the gallons to litres converter. On the other side stands the litre, the metric unit equal to one cubic decimetre.

The number 42 goes back to the first oil wells. The US petroleum industry was born in Pennsylvania in 1859, and oil was poured into casks of every size, so buyers never knew how much oil they were getting for their money. In August 1866 producers in Titusville agreed that a barrel of oil would hold 42 gallons[4]. That was the size of the tierce, a cask long used to ship herring, salmon, molasses and whale oil. Filled with crude, it weighed more than 300 pounds, about as much as one man could wrestle[4].

In 1872 the Petroleum Producers Association of the Pennsylvania oil region adopted the standard[4]. Today oil moves by pipeline and tanker, and the barrel stayed on as the unit in which exchanges quote prices and many oil companies report output.

How many litres of gasoline does a barrel of oil make?

In 2023 US refineries made an average of 44.65 gallons of products from every 42-gallon barrel of crude, more than went in. The products are less dense than crude, so they take up more room[5]. The table gives the amounts in gallons, as in the report, and in litres.

The shares shift from month to month, because refineries adjust output to demand[5]. We converted gallons to litres at 3.785411784 litres per US gallon.

How many litres are in a beer barrel and a keg?

A full US beer barrel is 117.35 litres, but bars get their beer in kegs that are fractions of it. Federal rules allow kegs of a whole barrel, a half, a third, a quarter, a sixth and an eighth[6]. The keg you see most often is the half barrel of 15.5 gallons, or 58.67 litres[7]. A quarter barrel holds 29.34 litres and a sixth barrel 19.56 litres.

In the UK, cask ale usually arrives at the pub in a firkin, a quarter of a beer barrel: 9 imperial gallons, or 40.91 litres[3]. The Campaign for Real Ale plans beer festivals in kilderkins, which hold two firkins, so 81.83 litres[3]. Across Europe the most common keg holds 50 litres, and the UK uses a keg of 11 imperial gallons, which comes to 50.007 litres[7].

Wine barrels are containers rather than units, so their size is set by tradition in each region. The common Bordeaux barrel holds 225 litres and the Burgundy barrel 228 litres[8].

Which number formats does this converter accept?

The field accepts and converts every one of these formats, so there is nothing to tidy up before you paste. The table shows what the converter does with each of them for an oil barrel, and the results come from the converter itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.5397.468 lA point marks the decimal part in English, and that is how we read it.
2,5397.468 lA comma followed by one or two digits is a European decimal comma, so the result is the same.
1,500238480.942 lThree digits after the comma make it a thousands separator, so we count fifteen hundred barrels. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.
3/4119.24 lWe work out a fraction with a slash ourselves, so you do not have to turn it into a decimal first.
1½238.481 lWe add the ½ sign to the number in front of it, so this is a barrel and a half.
2.5 bbl397.468 lA bbl abbreviation pasted along with the number does no harm, because we keep the number and drop the abbreviation.
1.5 million238480942.392 lWe multiply by a million when the word million follows the number, as it does in production news.
5 Mbbl794936.475 lIn US oil reports Mbbl stands for thousands of barrels, so we count five thousand.
1.2 MMbbl190784753.914 lMMbbl stands for millions of barrels, so we count one million two hundred thousand.

Frequently asked questions about barrels and litres

How much does a barrel of oil weigh, and how many barrels are in a metric ton?

A barrel measures volume, so its weight depends on how dense the crude is. OPEC's standard figure is 7.33 barrels to the metric ton, which puts one barrel at 0.136 tonnes, or 136 kilograms[9]. Crude from a given country varies: heavy Venezuelan oil gives 6.656 barrels per ton and light Algerian oil 8.052[9]. A barrel of the first weighs about 150 kilograms and of the second about 124.

How do I turn an oil price per barrel into a price per litre?

Divide the barrel price by 158.987. At 80 dollars a barrel, a litre of crude costs 0.50 dollars, and at 60 dollars it costs 0.38 dollars. That is the price of the raw material before refining, so you cannot compare it directly with pump prices, which also cover refining, transport and taxes.

Where does the abbreviation bbl come from?

Nobody knows for sure. A popular story says bbl means blue barrel, after Standard Oil's painted barrels. Shipping records, however, list honey, rum and whale oil by the bbl well before 1859, when the petroleum industry was only starting[4].

How do I convert barrels to litres in Excel?

Use the CONVERT function, CONVERT(number, from_unit, to_unit). The oil barrel has the code "barrel" and the litre "l"[10]. The formula =CONVERT(A1,"barrel","l") turns the barrels in cell A1 into litres and gives 158.987294928 for one barrel. Excel has no beer barrels and no barrel for liquids, so for those multiply by 117.35, 119.24 or 163.66.
