Convert liters to quarts
One litre is 1.0567 US liquid quarts, 0.8799 imperial quarts or 0.9081 dry quarts. Type a value in litres and the result appears straight away. The Quart type switch under both fields picks one of those three measures. A 5 l pack of oil comes to 5.28 US quarts.
How many quarts are in a liter?
One litre is 1.0567 US liquid quarts. Divide the value in litres by 0.946352946: quarts = litres ÷ 0.946352946[1].
The divisor moves with the measure you are working in. An imperial quart holds 1.1365225 litres, so a litre gives 0.8799 of one. A US dry quart holds 1.101220942715 litres, so a litre gives 0.9081 of one[1]. You set the measure on the Quart type switch under the fields.
The figure in quarts is always higher than the figure in litres, because a US quart is smaller than a litre.
The other direction is in the quarts to liters converter, and capacities quoted in gallons go through the liters to gallons converter.
What is a liter, and what is a quart?
A litre is a cube ten centimetres on a side, which is a cubic decimetre. The General Conference on Weights and Measures put that identity on record in 1964, allowing the word litre as a special name for the cubic decimetre[2]. From 1901 the definition ran through water instead: a litre was the volume of one kilogram of water at maximum density, 28 parts per million larger than the cubic decimetre[3].
The quart belongs to a different order and takes its value from the gallon, of which it is a quarter. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres, so a US liquid quart is 0.946352946 litres. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, which puts an imperial quart at 1.1365225 litres[1].
That difference is why a British and an American recipe using the same word land two-tenths of a litre apart at every quart. The switch under the fields keeps the two apart, and the line under it gives the capacity of each of the three quarts.

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 2.6417 US qt | The point is the decimal separator, so this is two and a half litres. |
| 2,5 | 2.6417 US qt | A comma followed by one digit is a European decimal comma, so we read it as two and a half. |
| 1,500 | 1585.0323 US qt | Three digits after the comma mark a thousands separator, so we count one thousand five hundred litres. The note “Read as 1500. If you meant 1.5, type 1.5.” appears under the field. |
| 1.500 | 1.585 US qt | A single point is always read as the decimal point, so this is one and a half litres. The note “Read as 1.5. If you meant 1500, type 1500.” appears under the field. |
| 1 500 | 1585.0323 US qt | A space between the thousands is skipped, so this is one thousand five hundred litres as well. |
| 3/4 | 0.7925 US qt | We convert a fraction with a slash directly, so it doesn’t need to become 0.75 first. |
| 1½ | 1.585 US qt | A ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it. |
| 2 l | 2.1134 US qt | A unit pasted along with the number is ignored, and we convert the value alone. |
How to convert liters to quarts
The arithmetic is a single division. These steps show how to pick the divisor and what to do with the answer.
Decide who the number is for
A reader in the United States works in liquid quarts, so leave the US liquid option in place. An older British recipe and Canadian paperwork mean the imperial quart, which is the UK / Imperial option.Type the value in litres
The result appears as you type. The field takes a point or a comma, so 1.5 and 1,5 give the same answer, and a slash fraction goes in as well: 1 1/2 is also 1.5 litres.Read the number of quarts
The result appears in the second field. The Copy result button puts the number on the clipboard. In a recipe, round to the measuring cup
An American kitchen measures in cups, and a cup is a quarter of a quart. A litre works out at 4.227 cups, so a recipe is easier to convert straight into cups in the liters to cups converter.
The liter on an American shelf
The United States counts volume in quarts and gallons, and yet two shelves in the shop carry litres. The first is soft drinks, sold in two-litre bottles — one of the few cases where a product in the United States is sold by a round number of metric units[4].
The second is alcohol. Federal rules give bottle sizes for wine and spirits in millilitres and litres only, and in January 2025 the spirits list grew again to include 700 ml, 945 ml and 1.5 litres among others[5]. That 945 ml size sits 1.35 millilitres below a US quart, so a bottle with that label is a quart in all but name.
Milk, motor oil and spring water stayed with quarts and gallons. That is how one basket ends up holding a two-litre bottle of soda next to a quart carton of milk.
Canada sells engine oil in litre bottles.

Litres in an American recipe
American recipes give volume in cups, pints and quarts, while a European kitchen counts in millilitres and litres. This direction earns its keep with pans and slow cookers, whose capacity the maker states in quarts.
A slow cooker sold as six-quart holds 5.68 litres, so a six-litre pan stands in for it. Large containers carry both measures in the United States, and the quarts to gallons converter handles that pair.

Why is the imperial column below 1?
Because an imperial quart holds 1.1365225 litres, which is more than a litre. One litre gives 0.8799 of it, and a full imperial quart arrives at 1.137 litres.
