Convert meters to decimeters

The meter is the SI base unit of length, and the rest of the series is derived from it. The speed of light fixes its value: the definition sets the speed of light in vacuum at exactly 299,792,458 meters per second, with the second itself described by a transition frequency in the caesium atom[1]. The definition of the meter therefore rests on a constant of nature rather than on a physical artefact kept in one place in the world.

Dividing the meter into ten equal parts gives the decimeter. The prefix deci does that work: it means one tenth and carries the symbol d[2]. One meter therefore holds ten decimeters, and each of those holds ten centimeters.

Each of the two units describes a different order of size. Meters give the height of a room, the length of a plot and a distance across open ground. The decimeter suits measurements where the count of centimeters runs into the tens and it is easier to work in tens at a time.

A cube built on the decimeter carries its own name in everyday language. A cube one decimeter along each edge has a volume of one litre, because the litre is, by a resolution of the General Conference on Weights and Measures, the special name of the cubic decimeter[3]. A meter holds 10 decimeters. Two meters give 20 decimeters, and five meters give 50 decimeters.

Every conversion in this direction comes down to multiplying the number of meters by ten. Half a meter is 5 decimeters. A quarter of a meter gives 2.5 decimeters. Three meters is 30 decimeters.

For whole meters you only add one zero to their number, so you can give those values from memory. Eight meters gives 80 decimeters. Fifteen meters is 150 decimeters. For values with a decimal point the point itself moves one place to the right, so 1.74 m turns into 17.4 dm and 0.97 m turns into 9.7 dm.

The way of counting stays the same at every size. A length of 22.6 m holds 226 decimeters. Five hundred meters gives 5,000 decimeters.

The converter works in both directions and shows the result as you type, so you do not need to memorize any of these numbers.

The conversion rests on a fixed relation: one meter is 10 decimeters. To turn meters into decimeters, you multiply their number by ten.

The full formula: decimeters = meters × 10. The other way round: meters = decimeters ÷ 10.

Three examples of different size follow from that formula. Two and a half meters multiplied by ten gives 25 decimeters. Ten meters is 100 decimeters. Seventy-seven meters gives 770 decimeters.

In writing, the multiplication comes down to a single move. The digits stay the same and the decimal point shifts one place to the right. From 3.8 meters you get 38 decimeters, and from 0.05 meters 0.5 decimeters. When a whole number such as 77 has no decimal point, you fill the gap left by the shift with a zero and get 770.
