Convert grams to carats
Enter a weight in grams and read the result in carats. One gram is 5 carats, so a stone of 0.6 g weighs 3 carats. The field accepts decimals typed with a point or a comma as well as simple fractions, and the result is given to a thousandth of a carat, a tenth of a point.
How do you convert grams to carats?
Multiply the weight in grams by 5 and you have the weight in carats. A stone of 0.6 grams weighs 3 carats.
Formula: carats = grams × 5
The multiplier is a round number because the metric carat is 200 milligrams, exactly one fifth of a gram[1]. Dividing by 0.2 gives the same answer.
In your head the shortcut is to halve the figure and move the decimal point one place to the right. A weight of 0.25 grams is 1.25 carats. Half a gram gives 2.5 carats. One gram is exactly 5 carats, and ten grams come to 50 carats.
The same multiplier works across the whole range, from a single stone to a parcel of goods. A hundred grams of stones is 500 carats and a kilogram is 5,000 carats.
Going the other way you multiply by 0.2, and the carats to grams converter handles it.
What is a gram, and what is a carat?
The gram is a thousandth of a kilogram and the unit behind everyday scales: kitchen, postal, laboratory. The same unit describes scrap gold at a buyer’s counter and a parcel at the post office.
The metric carat is five times smaller than a gram and covers gemstones and pearls. Its symbol is ct and its value, 200 milligrams, is the one the Federal Trade Commission uses when it defines the weight of a diamond[1].
A ring is described in two units because of scale. The ring weighs several grams with its setting, while the stone set into it weighs hundredths or tenths of a gram. One figure describes the piece and the other the stone, which is why a description of a ring can give both.
The carat received its shared value in October 1907, when the General Conference on Weights and Measures recommended the metric carat of 200 mg to governments and adopted the wording unanimously[2]. The United States wrote it into law in 1913, and federal tables still name the metric carat as the unit for the sale of precious stones[3].

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 12.5 ct | The decimal point from the numeric keypad, written the way English writes it |
| 2,5 | 12.5 ct | A comma pasted from a market that writes decimals that way is read as a decimal point, so the result is the same |
| 1,500 | 7500 ct | Three digits follow the comma, so we read it as a thousands separator: the field holds one thousand five hundred. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5. |
| 3/4 | 3.75 ct | We work the fraction out ourselves, so there is no need to turn it into a decimal first |
| 3½ | 17.5 ct | The ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it |
| 2.5 g | 12.5 ct | A unit symbol pasted along with the number is no trouble: we take the number and leave the symbol out |
When is a weight in carats the one you need?
Four situations where a gram reading has to be quoted in carats.
A stone out of its setting
Once a stone is out of its setting the scale shows its weight in grams. A reading of 0.204 grams is 1.02 carats and 0.318 grams is 1.59 carats — figures you can hold against a grading report.Writing a listing
Grading reports quote carats, so a listing uses the same unit. A stone weighing 1.4 grams comes to 7 carats and 2.2 grams to 11 carats.A parcel of stones or pearls
When stones or pearls are weighed together, the scale shows the weight of the whole parcel in grams. Twenty grams make 100 carats and a hundred grams 500 carats.Units from another market
An offer from Japan quotes pearls in momme, one from the Arabian Gulf in methgals. A momme is 3.75 grams and a methgal 4.5 grams, so convert the weight to grams, type it into the Grams field and read the result in carats.
Why does one stone carry two units?
The gram belongs to the metric system and describes the mass of anything. The carat serves one group of goods, gemstones and pearls, and its value of 200 milligrams was recommended to governments in 1907. That is how one stone comes to carry two figures, with a multiplication by 5 between them.
Stone weights are quoted to the point, a hundredth of a carat. That amounts to 0.002 grams. To round a weight correctly it is measured more finely, to the thousandth of a carat[5], which is 0.0002 grams, five times smaller than the step of a scale reading to 0.001 grams. Federal rules add a tolerance in the same spirit: a weight given to one decimal place is read as accurate to the second, so “.5 carat” stands for anything between .495 and .504[1].
Pearls keep their own habits. The CIBJO standard allows pearl grains, liang, carats and methgals for natural pearls, and momme, kan, liang, carats and grams for cultured ones[4]. A seller uses the unit of the market, and the buyer converts it to the one they know.

Common questions about converting grams to carats
How many carats are in one gram?
One gram is 5 carats, because a metric carat weighs 0.2 grams. The conversion is exact, so 2 grams give 10 carats and 0.5 grams give 2.5 carats.
How many carats is 5 grams of stones?
Five grams come to 25 carats. The same rule applies to a parcel sold by weight: 20 grams give 100 carats and 100 grams give 500 carats.
What scale step matches one point?
One point is 0.002 grams, so a scale stepping in thousandths of a gram shows a change every half point, and one stepping in hundredths every five points. To round a weight to the point correctly it is measured to the thousandth of a carat, which is 0.0002 grams.
Is gold jewellery weighed in carats?
A gold piece is weighed in grams. On gold the karat describes the alloy: 18 karat means eighteen parts gold in twenty-four, a fineness of 750. Fineness marks and their karat equivalents are on the carats to grams converter page.
What is a momme and how many carats is it?
The momme is the Japanese unit for cultured pearls, worth 3.75 grams or 18.75 carats. A thousand momme make one kan, that is 3.75 kilograms. Both units are listed in the CIBJO standard for the pearl trade.
How many points is a weight given in grams?
Multiply the grams by 500 and you have points. A stone of 0.15 grams is 75 points, that is 0.75 carats. A point is a hundredth of a carat and the notation is used for stones under one carat.
Is the carat a legal unit in the United States?
Yes. It entered federal law in 1913 at 200 milligrams, and the national tables of units name the metric carat of 200 milligrams as the unit used for the sale of precious stones. The Federal Trade Commission uses the same value in its jewellery guides.
