How many kilograms are in an ounce?

An avoirdupois ounce is 0.02835 kg, or 28.35 grams. The exact figure is 0.028349523125 kg, so you multiply the ounces by it: kilograms = ounces × 0.028349523125[1]. For a rough figure in your head, divide the ounces by 35; the answer comes out less than one percent too high.

Sixteen ounces make one pound, so a 16 oz package weighs 0.4536 kg. A 32 oz tub is 0.9072 kg, just short of a kilogram, and it takes 35.27 oz to reach a full kilo.

The troy ounce used for gold, silver and platinum is 0.0311 kg, exactly 0.0311034768 kg[1]. Set the Ounce type switch under the fields, and the unit next to the ounces field changes between oz and oz t. The kilograms to ounces converter works the other way round.

Where do ounces that need converting to kilograms come from?

Mostly from US recipes, US packaging and sports gear, where the ounce is a sixteenth of a pound and the two often appear together. A label reading 1 lb 8 oz means 24 ounces, which is 0.6804 kg. For smaller amounts in grams, the ounces to grams converter is quicker to read.

The inner scale of this dial is marked every 4 ounces up to 4 lb, and the outer one counts grams up to 2 kg. Four ounces on the inner ring line up with 113 grams on the outer one. Photo: Tuğçe Açıkyürek, Unsplash.

A birth weight such as 7 lb 6 oz works the same way. Multiply the pounds by 16 and add the ounces, which gives 118 oz, and then convert: the baby weighs 3.3452 kg. The pounds to grams converter takes the whole 7 lb 6 oz in one go.

Four hundred ounces of gold come to 12.4414 kg, and a thousand ounces of silver to 31.1035 kg. Mine output quoted in millions of ounces goes through the ounces to tons converter.

What number formats does this converter accept?

Paste a number the way you have it: with a decimal point or comma, with a comma or space between thousands, as a fraction, or together with oz. The field reads each of these, and the table shows what it does with them for the avoirdupois ounce. The converter itself worked out the results.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
12.50.3544 kgThe point separates the decimals, so this is twelve and a half ounces.
12,50.3544 kgOnly one digit follows the comma, so we read it as a decimal comma, the way European recipes write it.
1,50042.5243 kgThree digits follow the comma, so we treat it as a thousands separator and convert fifteen hundred ounces. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.
1 50042.5243 kgA space between thousands is dropped, the way some mint and bank reports print large numbers.
1.5000.04252 kgIn English the point always marks decimals, so this is one and a half ounces. In a German or Spanish text the same figures would mean fifteen hundred, so a note under the field offers that reading too, 1500.
3/40.02126 kgWe work out a fraction with a slash ourselves, the way a recipe writes 3/4 oz.
8½0.241 kgA ½ sign copied from a recipe is added to the number before it, so this is eight and a half ounces.
16 oz0.4536 kgThe oz pasted from a label along with the number does no harm: we take the number and skip the unit.

How to convert ounces to kilograms with this tool

Start by working out which ounce you have, because the switch depends on it.

  1. Check which ounce it is

Labels, recipes and product specs use the avoirdupois ounce. Coins, bars and metal prices use the troy ounce, often written oz t, ozt or with the word troy.
  2. Set the Ounce type switch

Choose Avoirdupois (oz) or Troy (oz t). The line under the switch shows how many ounces of each type make a kilogram.
  3. Enter the ounces and copy the result

The kilograms appear while you type. Copy result puts the number on your clipboard, Swap order opens the kilograms to ounces converter, and Clear all empties both fields.
