How many kilograms are in a ton?

A US short ton is 907.18474 kilograms[1] and a British long ton of 2,240 pounds[2] is 1,016.0469088 kilograms. Both numbers are exact, because both tons are defined in pounds and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms[1].

The metric tonne is a round number instead: exactly 1,000 kilograms[3]. That gives three multipliers for one word, and you choose which one the calculation uses with the Ton type selector under the fields.

Two short tons come to 1,814.37 kilograms and ten short tons to 9,071.85 kilograms. The same ten tons read as metric tonnes give a flat 10,000 kilograms, which is 928.15 kilograms more than the American reading of the same figure. For a quick estimate in your head, multiply by 907 for short tons and by 1,016 for long tons.

For the opposite direction, use the kilograms to tons converter, and for the same ton in pounds, the tons to pounds converter.

What is a ton, and what is a kilogram?

The metric tonne is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms, written with the symbol t. It is not an SI unit, but it is accepted for use with SI units[3]. In the United States the same unit carries the name metric ton[3].

Inside the SI the same mass is called a megagram, symbol Mg, but that name is rarely used, partly because the SI base unit of mass is the kilogram rather than the gram[4]. A megagram is a million grams, and that is the figure the tons to grams converter gives. Write the M as a capital, because mg is a milligram, a billion times smaller.

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. In November 2018 the international scientific community voted to redefine it in terms of the Planck constant, an invariant of nature[5]. Before that, the kilogram was a small polished cylinder of platinum and iridium, cast in 1879 and kept in a triple-locked vault on the outskirts of Paris[5].

There is one more unit between the two. In the United States the plain word hundredweight means 100 pounds, which is 45.36 kilograms, while the gross or long hundredweight is 112 pounds, which is 50.80 kilograms[6]. Twenty of either make a ton: 20 times 100 pounds is the 2,000-pound short ton, and 20 times 112 pounds is the 2,240-pound long ton[6].

Which ton is on your document?

Which ton you need depends on where the number came from. In the United States the word ton on its own means the 2,000-pound short ton[6]. In US commerce the long ton of 2,240 pounds has only limited use, mainly in restricted industrial fields[6], such as ship displacement and bulk goods like iron ore[2]. The United Kingdom excluded it from trade in 1985 and adopted the tonne of 1,000 kilograms[2]. In most English-speaking countries outside the US, tonne is the standard spelling of the metric unit[4].

Each measure carries its own multiplier. The short ton multiplies by 907.18474. The long ton multiplies by 1,016.0469088. The metric tonne multiplies by 1,000. The Ton type selector changes the multiplier and the unit shown next to the field at the same time, and the result updates as soon as you pick an option.

The long ton is exactly 12% heavier than the short ton[2]. On a 25-ton shipment the short ton gives 22,679.62 kilograms while the long ton gives 25,401.17 kilograms, a difference of 2,721.55 kilograms. When freight is billed by weight, that difference changes the invoice, so pick the ton before you read the result. Single items convert in the kilograms to pounds converter. The same three tons come to 35,273.96, 32,000 and 35,840 avoirdupois ounces, which the tons to ounces converter works out.

Tons to kilograms conversion table

The three columns match the three options of the Ton type selector. The same number of tons gives three different masses, and every long-ton figure is exactly 12% higher than the short-ton figure in the same row.

Which ton is used where?

One word covers three masses. The table gives each of them in kilograms next to where it is used.
Type of tonSymbolMass in kilogramsWhere it is used
Short tontn907.18474 kgUnited States, where the plain word ton means this
Long tonlong tn1,016.0469088 kgShip displacement and bulk goods in the US, excluded from UK trade in 1985
Metric tonnet1,000 kgMost English-speaking countries outside the US, spelled tonne
A short ton is 2,000 pounds and a long ton 2,240 pounds[2]. The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so both kilogram figures are exact[1].

How heavy are the hundredweights and the megagram?

The table sets the ton beside four related units, and each of them is a fixed number of kilograms. Twenty hundredweight make one ton in both the American and the British system.

Kilogramkg1 kgRetail scales and product labels
Hundredweight, short (100 lb)cwt45.36 kgThe plain word hundredweight in the United States

Both hundredweights and the twenty-to-a-ton rule come from NIST Handbook 44[6]. The kilogram figures follow from the pound of exactly 0.45359237 kilograms[1].

Which number formats does this converter handle?

Paste the number the way you have it: with a comma, with a point, with a space between thousands, as a fraction or next to a unit symbol. The field reads every one of these formats and converts it for you, and the table shows exactly what it does with each. The converter computed the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.52500 kgThe decimal point from the numeric keypad, written the way English writes it
2,52500 kgA comma pasted from a market that writes decimals that way is read as a decimal point, so the result is the same
1,5001500000 kgThree digits follow the comma, so we read it as a thousands separator: the field holds one thousand five hundred. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.
3/4750 kgWe work the fraction out ourselves, so there is no need to turn it into a decimal first
3½3500 kgThe ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it
2.5 t2500 kgThe t symbol stands for a metric ton and this field counts short tons, so the field converts it to 2.755778 and a line under it names the pasted 2.5 t

How do you convert tons to kilograms?

The arithmetic is one multiplication. The steps show which multiplier belongs to your number.

  1. Check where the number of tons came from

In American writing the plain word ton means the short ton. Tonne and metric ton both mean 1,000 kilograms. The long ton appears with ship displacement, bulk goods and British records from before 1985.
  2. Pick that measure in the Ton type selector

The selector under the fields has three options: Metric (t), Short, US (tn) and Long, UK (long tn). The line under them gives the mass of each ton, so the choice is visible before you type anything.
  3. Type the number of tons

The result appears as you type. The field takes a dot or a comma as the decimal mark and a fraction with a slash, so 1 1/2 gives the same answer as 1.5.
  4. Read the kilograms and take them further

The Copy result button puts the number from the result field on the clipboard. The Swap order button moves you to the kilograms to tons converter, and Clear all empties both fields before the next calculation.

How many kilograms are in half a ton?

Half a short ton is 453.59 kilograms. Half a metric tonne is 500 kilograms and half a long ton is 508.02 kilograms.

How many kilograms are in a British long ton?

A long ton is 1,016.0469088 kilograms, which is exactly 2,240 pounds. Twenty long hundredweight of 112 pounds each make one long ton.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

Tonne is the international spelling of the metric unit of 1,000 kilograms, and NIST gives metric ton as the name used for it in the United States. A plain ton in American writing is the short ton of 907.18474 kilograms.

How many kilograms are in a hundredweight?

A US hundredweight of 100 pounds is 45.36 kilograms. A long hundredweight of 112 pounds is 50.8 kilograms, and twenty of them make one long ton.

How do you write 3.5 tonnes in kilograms?

Three and a half tonnes is 3,500 kilograms. Move the decimal point three places to the right, and 0.75 tonnes becomes 750 kilograms in the same way.

How do you convert tons to kilograms in a spreadsheet?

Excel handles it with CONVERT(number, from_unit, to_unit). The mass table lists the tonne as a prefixed gram, so you write it as a megagram: CONVERT(2,"Mg","kg") returns 2000[7].
