How many ounces are in a ton?

A US short ton holds exactly 32,000 ounces, because it holds 2,000 pounds and every pound holds sixteen ounces[1]. The formula is ounces = tons × 32,000.

The long ton used for ship displacement holds 2,240 pounds, which comes to exactly 35,840 ounces[1]. The metric tonne is defined from the kilogram instead, so it lands on 35,273.96 ounces[1].

Precious metals use a heavier ounce. The troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams, just under ten percent more than the avoirdupois ounce[1]. A metric tonne of bullion therefore holds 32,150.75 troy ounces, a short ton holds 29,166.67 and a long ton 32,666.67.

Both measures sit in switches under the fields: Ton type and Ounce type. The result updates as soon as an option changes, and the abbreviation next to the result field moves from oz to oz t.

For the opposite direction use the ounces to tons converter, and for the same tons in kilograms the tons to kilograms converter.

What is a ton and what is an ounce?

In the United States and Canada the unmodified word ton means the short ton of 2,000 pounds[1]. Since 1 January 2014 its required abbreviation on weighing devices is tn[1]. The long ton of 2,240 pounds is the British ton, and NIST records that it appears in US trade only to a very limited extent, usually in restricted industrial fields[1].

The metric tonne is a third unit under the same name: 1,000 kilograms, written with the symbol t and accepted for use with the SI[2]. It is what a European invoice, a shipping manifest and a mining report mean by the word. In the SI the same mass is called the megagram, symbol Mg[3].

The ounce is one sixteenth of a pound and weighs exactly 28.349523125 grams[1]. That is the avoirdupois ounce, the one on food packaging, postal tariffs and boxing gloves. Single portions convert in the ounces to grams converter.

The troy ounce weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams and divides into 20 pennyweights, with twelve troy ounces to the troy pound[1]. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are priced in it everywhere, which is why a bullion figure and a cargo figure need different arithmetic.

Which ton and which ounce should you pick?

The ton follows the document the number came from. An American invoice, a freight quote and a scrap yard ticket mean the short ton. A European or metric document means the tonne of 1,000 kilograms. Ship displacement and older British paperwork mean the long ton. The same three tons in pounds are in the tons to pounds converter.

The bars carry a stamped 1 KILO 9999 FINE GOLD, while the market quotes the same metal in troy ounces: a kilogram is 32.15 ounces. Photo: Scottsdale Mint, Unsplash.

The ounce follows the goods. Everything outside precious metals is weighed in avoirdupois ounces. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are weighed in troy ounces, and the London Good Delivery rules describe a bar in them: a Good Delivery bar contains between 350 and 430 troy ounces of fine gold, and its gross weight is stated in troy ounces in multiples of 0.025[4].

Those two numbers give a simple picture of one tonne of gold. A thousand kilograms come to 32,150.75 troy ounces, which is about eighty bars. A single 400-ounce bar weighs 12.441 kilograms.

The three columns match the three options of the Ton type switch. The short ton and long ton columns hold whole numbers, because both tons are defined in pounds and a pound holds sixteen ounces.

Three tons and two ounces — what each one weighs

One word covers three masses on the ton side and two on the ounce side. The table gives each of them with the place it is used.

Which number formats does this converter handle?

Paste the number the way you have it: with a comma, with a point, with a space between thousands, as a fraction or next to a unit symbol. The field reads every one of these formats and converts it for you, and the table shows exactly what it does with each. The converter computed the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
2.588184.9 ozThe decimal point from the numeric keypad, written the way English writes it
2,588184.9 ozA comma pasted from a market that writes decimals that way is read as a decimal point, so the result is the same
1,50052910942.92 ozThree digits follow the comma, so we read it as a thousands separator: the field holds one thousand five hundred. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.

How do you convert tons to ounces?

The arithmetic is one multiplication, so the work is in matching two measures to the number in front of you.

  1. Check where the number of tons came from

An American text means the short ton whenever it writes ton on its own. The spellings tonne and metric ton mean 1,000 kilograms. Ship displacement figures and older British paperwork mean the long ton.
  2. Set that measure with the Ton type switch

The switch sits under the fields and offers Metric (t), Short, US (tn) and Long, UK (long tn). The line below it gives the mass of each ton, so the choice is visible before any value is typed.
  3. Pick the ounce with the Ounce type switch

Avoirdupois (oz) covers everything outside precious metals. Troy (oz t) covers gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The abbreviation next to the result field follows the choice, so the active ounce stays visible.
  4. Type the number of tons and read the result

The result appears as you type. The field takes a point or a comma as the decimal mark and a slash for fractions, so 1 1/2 gives the same answer as 1.5. Copy result puts the bare number on the clipboard, and Clear all empties both fields.

Frequently asked questions about tons and ounces

How many ounces are in a US ton?

A US short ton holds exactly 32,000 avoirdupois ounces. It follows straight from the definition: 2,000 pounds with sixteen ounces in each pound.

How many ounces are in a metric ton?

A metric tonne holds 35,273.96 avoirdupois ounces. Read with the troy ounce, the same mass holds 32,150.75 ounces.

How many ounces are in 2 tons?

Two short tons come to exactly 64,000 ounces. Two metric tonnes come to 70,547.92 ounces and two long tons to exactly 71,680.

How many ounces are in a long ton?

A long ton holds exactly 35,840 avoirdupois ounces, that is 2,240 pounds of sixteen ounces each. In troy ounces it comes to 32,666.67.

How many troy ounces are in a tonne of silver?

A metric tonne of silver holds 32,150.75 troy ounces, the same as a tonne of gold. The troy ounce measures mass, so the answer depends only on the number of tons and the ton you picked.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and an ounce?

An avoirdupois ounce weighs 28.349523125 grams and a troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams[1]. The troy ounce is 2.75 grams heavier, just under ten percent, and it applies to gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

How many ounces are in half a ton?

Half a short ton comes to exactly 16,000 ounces. Half a metric tonne comes to 17,636.98 ounces, and a quarter tonne to 8,818.49.

How is the US gold reserve stated in tons?

The Treasury reports it in fine troy ounces. On 31 August 2026 the total stood at 261,498,926.241 fine troy ounces[5], which converts to 8,133.53 metric tonnes. Fort Knox alone held 147,341,858.382 ounces, or 4,582.84 tonnes[5].

How do you tell a troy ounce from an ordinary ounce in writing?

The troy ounce carries the abbreviation oz t and the avoirdupois ounce carries a bare oz[1]. The same oz t appears next to the result field once Troy (oz t) is selected, so it stays next to the number.

How do you convert tons to ounces in a spreadsheet?

Excel does it with CONVERT, written CONVERT(number, from_unit, to_unit). The short ton is "ton" and the avoirdupois ounce is "ozm", so CONVERT(1,"ton","ozm") returns 32000[6]. The metric tonne goes in as a megagram, so CONVERT(1,"Mg","ozm") gives 35,273.9619[6].
