Convert kilograms to ounces
1 kg is 35.274 oz, the everyday avoirdupois ounce used on US food labels, in recipes and in postage rates. Type any number of kilograms and the ounces appear as you type. Gold and silver are weighed in troy ounces, so the switch under the fields also gives you that answer: the same kilo is 32.1507 oz t.
How many ounces are in a kilogram?
A kilogram is 35.274 ounces. One avoirdupois ounce is exactly 0.028349523125 kg, so you divide the kilograms by that number: ounces = kilograms ÷ 0.028349523125[1]. Multiplying by 35.274 gives the same answer to four decimal places, which is enough for any kitchen or shipping scale.
Half a kilo is 17.637 oz, and a 2.5 kg bag of rice or flour holds 88.1849 oz. If a European recipe asks for 250 g of butter, that is 0.25 kg, or 8.8185 oz, a little more than two US sticks of 4 oz each.
Gold, silver and platinum use a heavier ounce, the troy ounce, and a kilogram holds 32.1507 of them[1]. Pick either one with the Ounce type switch under the fields, and the unit next to the result changes between oz and oz t. For the opposite direction, use the ounces to kilograms converter.
What are the kilogram and the ounce?
The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). Its value is fixed through the Planck constant, set at exactly 6.626 070 15 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s[2]. Most of the world weighs groceries, luggage and people in kilograms, and in the UK and Australia food packs carry grams and kilograms too. Smaller amounts are easier in the grams to ounces converter.
The word ounce comes from the Latin uncia, a twelfth part[3]. Two ounces are still in use. The avoirdupois ounce is a sixteenth of a pound, 28.35 g, and it is the one on US groceries, parcels and sports gear. A pound therefore has exactly 16 ounces, which the pounds to ounces converter puts to use. The troy ounce is a twelfth of the troy pound and weighs 31.1034768 g[1].

A kilogram never comes out as a round number of ounces because the ounce is defined through the pound, and since 1959 the pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kg[1]. Dividing a kilogram by a sixteenth of that gives 35.27396.
How many troy ounces are in a kilo of gold or silver?
A kilo bar of gold or silver holds 32.1507 troy ounces. The metal makes no difference, because the ounce measures mass alone. A troy ounce is heavier than an avoirdupois ounce, so fewer of them fit into the same kilogram.
Bars are often sold by the kilo, while the market price is quoted per ounce. The LBMA Gold Price is set twice a day, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, in US dollars per troy ounce, and the LBMA Silver Price once a day at noon[4]. To turn a price per ounce into a price per kilo, multiply it by 32.1507. At $4,000 an ounce, a kilo of the same metal comes to $128,602.99 before any dealer premium.

The large bars traded in London are also weighed in ounces. A Good Delivery gold bar holds between 350 and 430 fine troy ounces, roughly 10.9 to 13.4 kg, and its weight is stated in steps of 0.025 oz[5]. National reserves quoted in tonnes go through the tons to ounces converter.

What number formats does this converter accept?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 88.1849 oz | The point separates the decimals, so this is two and a half kilograms. |
| 2,5 | 88.1849 oz | Only one digit follows the comma, so we read it as a decimal comma, the way a European label writes 2,5 kg. |
| 1,500 | 52910.9429 oz | Three digits follow the comma, so we treat it as a thousands separator and convert fifteen hundred kilograms. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5. |
| 1 500 | 52910.9429 oz | A space between thousands is dropped, the way it appears in shipping documents from Europe. |
| 1.500 | 52.9109 oz | In English the point always marks decimals, so this is one and a half kilograms. In a German or French text the same figures would mean fifteen hundred, so a note under the field offers that reading too, 1500. |
| 3/4 | 26.4555 oz | We work out a fraction with a slash ourselves, so three quarters of a kilo needs no conversion to 0.75 first. |
| 1½ | 52.9109 oz | A ½ sign copied from a recipe is added to the number before it, so this is one and a half kilograms. |
| 2.5 kg | 88.1849 oz | A unit pasted along with the number does no harm: we take the number and skip the unit. |

Frequently asked questions about kilograms and ounces
Does a kilo of flour have as many ounces as a kilo of gold?
Yes, the mass is the same, but the two are usually counted in different ounces. A kilo of flour is 35.274 avoirdupois ounces, while a kilo of gold is quoted as 32.1507 troy ounces. Both numbers describe exactly one kilogram.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?
No. A fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume, and a US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml. This converter works with the ounce of weight. For drinks and liquids, use the milliliters to ounces converter.
How do I convert kilograms to ounces in Excel?
Use the CONVERT function. =CONVERT(A1,"kg","ozm") turns the kilograms in cell A1 into avoirdupois ounces, since ozm is Excel's code for the ounce of mass[6]. The function has no troy ounce, so for gold and silver type =A1/0.0311034768 instead.
How many pounds is a kilogram?
A kilogram is 2.2046 pounds, which is 2 lb and 3.27 oz. For weights in pounds alone, the kilograms to pounds converter does the conversion in one step.
