How many grams are in a ton?

A US short ton is 907,184.74 grams and a metric tonne is 1,000,000 grams. For the metric tonne you multiply by a million: grams = tons × 1,000,000. Two metric tonnes therefore come to 2,000,000 g and half a tonne to 500,000 g.

That million follows from the way the SI is built. The tonne is a second name for the megagram, and the prefix mega means a million, so the SI Brochure writes the unit out as 1 t = 1 Mg = 10³ kg[1]. A metric tonne and a million grams are one mass under two spellings.

The other two tons come out differently because the pound defines them, and the pound is 453.59237 g. A short ton is 2,000 pounds, giving 907,184.74 g. A British long ton is 2,240 pounds, giving 1,016,046.9088 g[2]. Both figures are exact, because the mass of the pound is exact. The Ton type switch under the fields decides which of the three the converter uses.

What is a ton and what is a gram?

A tonne is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms, written with the symbol t. The SI itself leaves it outside the system, while the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures accepts it for use with the SI and adopted its symbol as far back as 1879[3]. Some English-speaking countries call the same unit the metric ton, as the SI Brochure notes[1].

A gram is a unit of mass equal to one thousandth of a kilogram, with the symbol g. In the CGS system that physics used before the SI, the gram was the base unit[4]. Today the kilogram is the base unit, yet the names for multiples of mass are still built on the word gram: the International Committee for Weights and Measures declared that rule in 1967[1]. That is why a million grams is called a megagram and why a thousandth of a gram is a milligram.

If the number in front of you is in kilograms, the kilograms to grams converter does the same arithmetic, and the tons to kilograms converter gives the answer one step earlier.

How many grams are in a short ton and in a long ton?

A short ton is 907,184.74 g and a long ton is 1,016,046.9088 g. Both numbers are exact, because both come from the pound of 453.59237 g: 2,000 pounds give the first value and 2,240 pounds the second[2]. The tons to pounds converter handles the pound count on its own.

Which ton you pick follows from the document the number came from. NIST states the split plainly: in the United States and Canada the ton most commonly used is the short ton, in Great Britain it is the long ton, and in countries using the metric system it is the metric ton[5]. For cargo in overseas traffic the same handbook says the weight is usually expressed in long tons or metric tons, with the short ton used only occasionally[5].

One more ton has its mass stated in grams from the start. The assay ton, a unit used in assaying, is about 29.16667 g[6]. A short ton holds 29,166 and two thirds troy ounces, and an assay ton holds the same number of milligrams. According to NIST, the milligrams of precious metal obtained from one assay ton of ore therefore give the troy ounces per short ton directly[2].

How many grams are in the units built on the gram?

Names for multiples of mass are formed by attaching a prefix to the word gram, so a million grams is a megagram and that unit is the same mass as a tonne. The decagram of 10 grams and the hectogram of 100 grams sit between the gram and the kilogram on this ladder. The first row is handled by the milligrams to grams converter.

How many grams are in each of the three tons?

Each of the three tons follows a different definition. The metric one comes from the kilogram and the other two from the pound of 453.59237 g, which is why all three values are exact down to the last digit.

Which number formats does this converter handle?

Paste the number the way you have it: with a comma, with a point, with a space between thousands, as a fraction or next to a unit symbol. The field reads every one of these formats and converts it for you, and the table shows exactly what it does with each. The converter computed the results itself.
What you typeWhat the converter showsHow we read it
1.51500000 gThe decimal point from the numeric keypad, written the way English writes it
1,51500000 gA comma pasted from a market that writes decimals that way is read as a decimal point, so the result is the same
1,5001500000000 gThree digits follow the comma, so we read it as a thousands separator: the field holds one thousand five hundred. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5.
3/4750000 gWe work the fraction out ourselves, so there is no need to turn it into a decimal first
2½2500000 gThe ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it
1.5 t1500000 gThe t symbol stands for a metric ton and this field counts short tons, so the field converts it to 1.653467 and a line under it names the pasted 1.5 t
2.6e-32600 gScientific notation, the way a spreadsheet shows very small numbers, is read as it stands

How do you convert tons to grams in a spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet has a function for this, and the answer depends on the unit code you hand it. The codes in the steps below come from the documentation of that function.

  1. Write the CONVERT function with a unit code

In Excel the function is CONVERT and it takes three arguments: CONVERT(number,from_unit,to_unit)[7]. The gram has the code "g", and you write the metric tonne as "Mg", because the prefix M multiplies a metric unit by a million.
  2. Use different codes for the short and the long ton

The code "ton" belongs to the short ton and "uk_ton" to the long ton. LibreOffice Calc 26.8 documents the same codes and names them Short ton and Long ton[8]. So =CONVERT(A1,"ton","g") converts short tons and =CONVERT(A1,"uk_ton","g") converts long ones.
  3. Check the formulas on one known value

Put the number 1 in cell A1 and compare the results with this page. The formula with "Mg" should show 1000000, the one with "ton" 907184.74 and the one with "uk_ton" 1016046.9088. When all three figures agree, the formulas carry the right codes.
  4. Set the cell format when the number runs long

Ten thousand tons come to 10,000,000,000 g, which is eleven digits. Scientific format shortens that result to 1.00E+10. The converter above gives the same value under the result field as 1 × 10¹⁰ g, so the two readings describe one mass in two conventions.

Frequently asked questions about tons and grams

How many grams are in a metric tonne?

A metric tonne holds 1,000,000 grams, exactly a million. The same mass is 1,000 kilograms and one megagram, so all three spellings describe a single value.

How many grams are in 2 tons?

Two short tons come to 1,814,369.48 g. Two metric tonnes give 2,000,000 g and two long tons 2,032,093.82 g.

How many grams are in half a ton?

Half a short ton is 453,592.37 g. Half a metric tonne gives 500,000 g and a quarter of a tonne 250,000 g.

How many grams are in 10 tons?

Ten short tons come to 9,071,847.4 g. Ten metric tonnes give 10,000,000 g and ten long tons 10,160,469.09 g.

How many grams are in a US ton?

A US short ton holds 907,184.74 g, which is exactly 2,000 pounds of 453.59237 g each[2]. NIST records the short ton as the ton most commonly used in the United States and Canada[5].

How many grams are in a UK ton?

A British long ton holds 1,016,046.9088 g, which is exactly 2,240 pounds[2]. NIST names it as the ton of Great Britain and records that the deadweight tonnage of ships is stated in long tons or metric tons[5].

Is a tonne the same as a megagram?

Yes. The SI Brochure gives the unit as 1 t = 1 Mg = 10³ kg, so the megagram and the metric tonne are one mass[1]. Write the symbol with a capital M, because mg stands for milligram.

Why are multiples of mass named from the gram when the kilogram is the base unit?

That is the 1967 declaration of the International Committee for Weights and Measures: names for multiples and submultiples of the unit of mass are formed by attaching a prefix to the word gram[1]. So a million grams is a megagram, and a millionth of a kilogram is a milligram.

How many grams are in an assay ton?

An assay ton is about 29.16667 g[6]. NIST explains that it stands to the milligram as the short ton stands to the troy ounce, so the milligrams of precious metal from one assay ton of ore give the troy ounces per short ton directly[2].

How do you enter a very large or very small number in the field?

The field takes exponent notation in several shapes: 2.4e3, 2.4E3 and 2.4 × 10³. It also takes a plain fraction, so 1 1/2 gives the same answer as 1.5. A line under the result field carries the same mass in scientific notation, which makes a ten-digit answer readable at a glance.
