Convert pounds to grams
A pound is exactly 453.59237 grams. One and a half pounds, or 1.5 lb, is therefore 680.39 g. Type a weight in pounds and the grams appear as you type. The field also accepts pounds with ounces, such as 7 lb 6 oz, and a switch below the fields selects the metric pound of half a kilogram.
You can also type a weight as 7 lb 6 oz.
How do you convert pounds to grams?
Multiply the number of pounds by 453.59237 to get grams. One and a half pounds, or 1.5 lb, comes to 680.39 grams.
Formula: grams = pounds × 453.59237
The factor is exact, because since 1 July 1959 the international pound has been defined as 0.45359237 kilograms[1]. For mental arithmetic, 454 is close enough. It gives a result nine hundredths of a percent above the exact one.
Fractions of a pound use the same factor. A quarter pound weighs 113.4 grams. Half a pound comes to 226.8 grams. Three quarters of a pound is 340.19 grams.
Divide the result by 1,000 to get kilograms. One and a half pounds is 0.68 kilograms that way. With large weights this step keeps the number short. Two hundred pounds is 90,718.47 grams, or 90.72 kilograms.
To go the other way, divide by the same factor. The grams to pounds converter writes a weight in grams as pounds and ounces.
What is a pound, and what is a gram?
The pound is a unit of mass in the imperial and US customary systems. The international pound weighs exactly 453.59237 grams[2]. Its symbol, lb, comes from the Latin libra[1].
NIST, the US national measurement institute, divides the pound into 16 ounces[2]. An ounce therefore weighs 28.35 grams, and the ounces to grams converter handles any number of them. The same pound also equals 7,000 grains, which the grains to grams converter turns into grams.
A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, the base unit of mass in the SI. A kilogram is 2.2046 pounds, and the kilograms to pounds converter handles larger weights.
In the United Kingdom the pound still appears on goods, next to the metric figure. The Weights and Measures Act 1985 allows an imperial quantity when the metric quantity is the more prominent one and the imperial figure is printed in characters no larger than the metric one[3].

Which number formats does this converter handle?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | 1133.98 g | The decimal point from the numeric keypad, written the way English writes it |
| 2,5 | 1133.98 g | A comma pasted from a market that writes decimals that way is read as a decimal point, so the result is the same |
| 1,500 | 680388.56 g | Three digits follow the comma, so we read it as a thousands separator: the field holds one thousand five hundred. A note under the field shows the other possible reading, 1.5. |
| 3/4 | 340.19 g | We work the fraction out ourselves, so there is no need to turn it into a decimal first |
| 3½ | 1587.57 g | The ½ character copied from a recipe or a label is added to the number in front of it |
| 2.5 lb | 1133.98 g | A unit symbol pasted along with the number is no trouble: we take the number and leave the symbol out |
Which pound should you choose in the converter?
The switch below the fields decides whether a pound weighs 453.59 or 500 grams. The choice depends on where the number you are converting comes from.
A recipe or package from the US, the UK or Canada
Keep the international pound, because that is the value of the pound on labels in those countries. A recipe calling for 3 lb of potatoes comes to 1,360.78 grams.A weight written in pounds and ounces
Type it into the Pounds (lb) field as it is, for example 5 lb 8 oz. The converter turns the ounces into part of a pound and returns 2,494.76 grams. Pounds with ounces work with the international pound.A German or French recipe
Set the Pound type switch to Metric (500 g). In such a recipe, ein Pfund Mehl or une livre de farine means 500 grams of flour, and two of those pounds make a full kilogram.
