How much does a file weigh after converting JPG to GIF?

Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. GIF stores at most 256 colours, so the photo loses its smooth tonal transitions; the simple icon fits in the palette without loss.

Is GIF suitable for a web page?

Not for publishing on the web. GIF stores at most 256 colours and packs them with the LZW algorithm from the eighties; the test photo weighed 830.6 KB in JPG and 930.8 KB in GIF, and lost its smooth tonal transitions on the way. For a web page keep JPG or save the image as WebP or AVIF, because those formats give the lightest files in a browser.

GIF makes sense where compatibility with old programs and email clients matters: simple graphics, icons and newsletter material.
