Why convert JPG to PNG?

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format optimised for photographs. Every time a JPG file is re-saved, the image loses a small amount of detail due to lossy compression. PNG, on the other hand, uses lossless compression - no data is discarded, so the image remains pixel-perfect.

Converting JPG to PNG is useful when you need to edit an image further without accumulating compression artefacts, when a platform requires PNG uploads, or when you want to add transparency later in a graphics editor.

How much does a file weigh before and after JPG to PNG conversion?

We ran 8 JPG files through this converter with no quality slider, because the output is lossless or fixed: two Unsplash photos at different resolutions, a product photo, a leaf macro, a real screenshot with text, a logo and an icon with a transparent background, and a text page at scanner resolution. Weights are given exactly as the tool prints them in the queue: in kilobytes and megabytes of 1,024 bytes, with the same rounding. We took the measurement ourselves on 11 September 2026 in a Chromium browser; the result depends on the image content, so your file may come out differently.

Is PNG suitable for a web page?

Not for publishing on the web. For a web page keep JPG or save the image as WebP or AVIF, because those formats give the lightest files in a browser.

PNG makes sense where lossless storage and transparency matters: further editing in a graphics program, graphics with text and sharp edges, office documents.

Tips for converting JPG to PNG

A few tips to help you avoid common issues during conversion:

Very large files
Converting images above 4000×4000 pixels may be slower and strain the browser. If processing many large files, consider splitting them into batches of 10–20.
The file will grow
PNG stores every pixel without loss, so a photo in JPG gives a file several times larger. That is normal; for the web keep JPG.
Transparency
JPG does not store transparency, so the resulting PNG file is fully opaque, although the PNG format itself supports an alpha channel.
Keep the originals
Converting to PNG does not recover detail lost earlier in JPG, and the resulting file is larger. Keep the original if the image is going back to a web page.
