Is PNG suitable for a web page?

Not for publishing on the web. The test photo grew from 830.6 KB to 3.84 MB, because PNG stores every pixel without loss. For a web page keep JPG or save the image as WebP or AVIF, because those formats give the lightest files in a browser.

PNG makes sense where lossless storage and transparency matters: further editing in a graphics program, graphics with text and sharp edges, office documents.

Tips for converting JPG to PNG

A few tips to help you avoid common issues during conversion:

Very large files
Converting images above 4000×4000 pixels may be slower and strain the browser. If processing many large files, consider splitting them into batches of 10–20.
The file will grow
PNG stores every pixel without loss, so a photo in JPG gives a file several times larger: our test photo grew from 830.6 KB to 3.84 MB. That is normal; for the web keep JPG.
Transparency
JPG does not store transparency, so the resulting PNG file is fully opaque, although the PNG format itself supports an alpha channel.
Keep the originals
Converting to PNG does not recover detail lost earlier in JPG, and the resulting file is larger. Keep the original if the image is going back to a web page.

How much does a file weigh after converting JPG to PNG?

Three test files went through this converter at the default settings: a photo of 1280 × 1659 pixels, a screenshot of 1920 × 1060 pixels and a 512 × 512 pixel icon with a transparent background. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024, with the same rounding.
