Why convert GIF to PNG?

GIF is limited to 256 colors and only supports binary transparency (a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque). PNG removes both limitations — it supports millions of colors and full alpha transparency with smooth semi-transparent edges. Converting GIF to PNG gives you a higher-quality image file.

PNG is a lossless format supported by every browser, operating system, and image editor. The binary transparency from your GIF will be preserved in PNG, and you'll gain the ability to edit the image with full color depth in any graphics application.

PNG files may be slightly larger than GIF for very simple graphics, but the gain in color depth and transparency quality is significant. For web optimization, consider converting to WebP instead.

This converter processes files locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. No registration, no limits, no watermarks.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Upload your GIF file

Drag and drop your GIF image onto the converter area or click to browse your device. You can add multiple files at once for batch conversion.
  2. Click Convert

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider: every pixel goes into the file unchanged and transparency stays.
  3. Download PNG

The Download button next to a file saves it on its own, and Download all packs all finished files into one ZIP archive. With a single finished file no archive is made, the file downloads directly.

When should you convert GIF to PNG?

  1. Website optimization

Convert GIF to PNG to preserve transparency and image quality for web graphics.
  2. Email and sharing

PNG files are universally accepted by email clients like Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail. Convert to PNG for high-quality images suitable for sharing.
  3. Further editing

PNG opens in every graphics editor and stores pixels without loss, so further saves do not degrade the image.
  4. Documents and archival

PNG is an excellent choice for archival and professional printing due to its lossless compression.

What makes this GIF to PNG converter different?

  1. Complete privacy

Your GIF files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server – your images stay on your device at all times.
  2. Many files at once

Add any number of GIF files, each up to 100 MB. The converter processes them one by one and shows the status of each.
  3. Size before and after

Next to every file you see the input and output size, and under the list the total for the whole queue, so you know at once how much a file grew or shrank.
  4. Download in one archive

The Download all button packs all finished files into one ZIP archive, so you do not have to approve a dozen downloads one after another.

How much does a file weigh after converting GIF to PNG?

Three test files went through this converter at the default settings: a photo of 1280 × 1659 pixels, a screenshot of 1920 × 1060 pixels and a 512 × 512 pixel icon with a transparent background. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024, with the same rounding.
FileDimensions in pixelsGIFPNGChange

Screenshot1920 × 1060130.3 KB300.4 KB2.3 times larger
Icon with transparency512 × 5126.55 KB19.6 KB3 times larger
Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. PNG stores every pixel without loss, so the size depends on the amount of detail, not on the source format: the photo grows the most, the simple icon the least.

Is PNG suitable for a web page?

Not for publishing on the web. The test photo grew from 1.34 MB to 3.66 MB, because PNG stores every pixel without loss. For a web page keep GIF or save the image as WebP or AVIF, because those formats give the lightest files in a browser.

PNG makes sense where lossless storage and transparency matters: further editing in a graphics program, graphics with text and sharp edges, office documents.
