Why convert GIF to WebP?

GIF is limited to 256 colors and uses legacy LZW compression. WebP supports millions of colors, alpha transparency, and achieves 25–50% better compression than GIF for static images. Converting GIF to WebP improves both image quality and file size.

WebP is supported by all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, and Edge. It removes the 256-color limitation of GIF, so images with gradients and detailed graphics look significantly better in WebP.

Note that this converter handles static images. If your GIF is animated, the converter will extract the first frame. For animated content, consider using video formats (MP4, WebM) which offer far better compression than animated GIF.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting GIF to WebP?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

80% (default) – a good balance for most use cases. Since GIF is limited to 256 colors, WebP at 80% preserves the original quality perfectly while adding millions of colors support.
85–90% – for detailed graphics with gradients that benefit from WebP's superior color depth.

GIF uses lossless LZW compression with 256 colors. WebP at any quality setting will produce better-looking results thanks to its full color depth support.

How much does a file weigh after converting GIF to WebP?

Three test files went through this converter at the default settings, that is at 80 percent quality: a photo of 1280 × 1659 pixels, a screenshot of 1920 × 1060 pixels and a 512 × 512 pixel icon with a transparent background. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024, with the same rounding.
