Why convert HEIC to WebP?

HEIC is the default photo format on Apple devices but is not supported on Windows, Android, or most web platforms. WebP is a modern format supported by all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) that offers excellent compression — comparable to HEIC but with universal web compatibility.

Converting HEIC to WebP is ideal for publishing iPhone photos on websites, e-commerce platforms, and social media. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPG and support both lossy and lossless compression with alpha transparency.

For maximum compression with the latest browsers, consider AVIF. For maximum device compatibility (including email clients and legacy software), convert to JPG instead.

All processing happens locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. No registration, no limits, no watermarks.

How to convert HEIC to WebP

  1. Upload your HEIC file

Drag and drop your HEIC image onto the converter area or click to browse your device. You can add multiple files at once for batch conversion.
  2. Set the quality

The Set WebP quality slider takes values from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. A lower value gives a lighter file, a higher one keeps more detail. Then click Convert.
  3. Download WebP

The Download button next to a file saves it on its own, and Download all packs all finished files into one ZIP archive. With a single finished file no archive is made, the file downloads directly.

When should you convert HEIC to WebP?

  1. Website optimization

HEIC photos from iPhone cannot be displayed in web browsers. Converting to WebP creates web-optimized images supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) with excellent compression.
  2. Every recipient has to open the file

Email clients and older graphics programs do not display WebP files yet. For a photo going by email or into such a program use the HEIC to JPG converter.
  3. Online shop

Product galleries and thumbnails in WebP load faster, and the transparent background of a packshot stays in the file.
  4. The file is still going back for editing

Every further save in a lossy format removes some detail. When the image is still going into an editor, keep the original HEIC file and convert only the final version.

What makes this HEIC to WebP converter different?

  1. Complete privacy

Your HEIC files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server – your images stay on your device at all times.
  2. Many files at once

Add any number of HEIC files, each up to 100 MB. The converter processes them one by one and shows the status of each.
  3. Quality slider

The Set WebP quality slider from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. Next to every file you see the size before and after conversion, and under the list the total for the whole queue.
  4. Download in one archive

The Download all button packs all finished files into one ZIP archive, so you do not have to approve a dozen downloads one after another.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting HEIC to WebP?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

  • 80% (default) – a good balance for web publishing and sharing. The visual difference compared to the original HEIC is virtually unnoticeable.
  • 85–90% – for product photography and portfolios where quality is the priority.
  • 60–70% – for email attachments and thumbnails where file size matters most.

WebP files are typically slightly larger than HEIC at equivalent quality, since HEIC uses more advanced compression (HEVC). The benefit is universal browser compatibility.

How much does a file weigh after converting HEIC to WebP?

Three 1440 × 960 pixel photos from the HEIF test set published by Nokia went through the converter at the default settings, that is at 80 percent quality: an autumn forest by the water, a city street at night and a crowd on a sunlit street. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024.
FileDimensions in pixelsHEICWebPChange
Autumn forest by the water1440 × 960286.7 KB382.4 KB33 percent larger
City street at night1440 × 96040.4 KB72.1 KB78 percent larger
Crowd on a street1440 × 960127.3 KB185.2 KB45 percent larger
Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. Photos from the HEIF set are already heavily compressed, so WebP at 80 percent comes out heavier than the original; move the slider down to 65 or 70 percent and the size gets close to the HEIC file.

Frequently asked questions about HEIC to WebP conversion

Is converting HEIC to WebP free?

Yes, this HEIC to WebP converter is completely free with no limits. You can convert as many files as you need without registration or watermarks.

Does the converter upload my files to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to WebP?

Yes, WebP from this converter is saved lossy, at the quality set by the Set WebP quality slider (default 80 percent). At that value the difference is invisible on screen, while at 60 percent fine detail starts to blur. The encoder has no lossless mode.

Can I add transparency when converting HEIC to WebP?

WebP stores an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the HEIC file stay unchanged in the result.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes, the converter supports batch conversion. You can add multiple HEIC files and convert them all to WebP simultaneously. Use the batch download option to save all converted files at once.

Why can't I open HEIC files on my Windows PC?

HEIC is Apple's proprietary image format used by iPhones and iPads. Windows doesn't natively support HEIC without additional codecs. Converting HEIC to WebP solves this compatibility issue, allowing you to view and share your photos on any device.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera have displayed WebP for years, and Safari since version 14 on macOS Big Sur (2020) and iOS 14.

What is the maximum file size?

Each file may be up to 100 MB; a larger one stops on the list with a message that it is too large. The number of files in the queue is not limited, and large images take longer because the browser decodes them fully into memory.

How do I download all files at once?

The Download all button packs the finished files into one ZIP archive named heic-webp.zip. With a single finished file no archive is made and the file downloads directly.
