Why convert HEIC to AVIF?

HEIC is the default photo format on Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac). AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) offers comparable or better compression than HEIC but with broader browser support and an open, royalty-free standard. Converting HEIC to AVIF gives you a modern, web-optimized format.

AVIF supports millions of colors, alpha transparency, HDR, and both lossy and lossless modes. It is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 121+. AVIF files are typically similar in size to HEIC but compatible with web browsers.

This conversion is ideal for publishing iPhone photos on the web with maximum compression and quality. For broader device compatibility (including older browsers), consider converting to WebP or JPG instead.

All processing happens locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. No registration, no limits, no watermarks.

How to convert HEIC to AVIF

  1. Upload your HEIC file

Drag and drop your HEIC image onto the converter area or click to browse your device. You can add multiple files at once for batch conversion.
  2. Set the quality

The Set AVIF quality slider takes values from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. A lower value gives a lighter file, a higher one keeps more detail. Then click Convert.
  3. Download AVIF

The Download button next to a file saves it on its own, and Download all packs all finished files into one ZIP archive. With a single finished file no archive is made, the file downloads directly.

When should you convert HEIC to AVIF?

  1. Website optimization

HEIC photos from iPhone are not supported by web browsers. Converting to AVIF creates web-ready images with the best compression available — files are typically similar in size to HEIC but displayable in all modern browsers.
  2. Every recipient has to open the file

Email clients and older graphics programs do not display AVIF files yet. For a photo going by email or into such a program use the HEIC to JPG converter.
  3. Online shop

Product galleries and thumbnails in AVIF load faster, and the transparent background of a packshot stays in the file.
  4. The file is still going back for editing

Every further save in a lossy format removes some detail. When the image is still going into an editor, keep the original HEIC file and convert only the final version.

What makes this HEIC to AVIF converter different?

  1. Complete privacy

Your HEIC files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server – your images stay on your device at all times.
  2. Many files at once

Add any number of HEIC files, each up to 100 MB. The converter processes them one by one and shows the status of each.
  3. Quality slider

The Set AVIF quality slider from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. Next to every file you see the size before and after conversion, and under the list the total for the whole queue.
  4. Download in one archive

The Download all button packs all finished files into one ZIP archive, so you do not have to approve a dozen downloads one after another.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting HEIC to AVIF?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

  • 80% (default) – a good balance for web publishing. AVIF at 80% typically matches or exceeds the visual quality of the original HEIC at a similar file size.
  • 85–90% – for high-quality galleries and portfolios where every detail matters.
  • 60–70% – for thumbnails and preview images where file size is the priority.

Both HEIC and AVIF use advanced lossy compression (HEVC and AV1 respectively). AVIF typically produces similar or slightly smaller files than HEIC with comparable visual quality.

How much does a file weigh after converting HEIC to AVIF?

Three 1440 × 960 pixel photos from the HEIF test set published by Nokia went through the converter at the default settings, that is at 80 percent quality: an autumn forest by the water, a city street at night and a crowd on a sunlit street. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024.

Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. Photos from the HEIF set are already heavily compressed, so AVIF at 80 percent comes out heavier than the original; move the slider down to 65 or 70 percent and the size gets close to the HEIC file.

Frequently asked questions about HEIC to AVIF conversion

Is converting HEIC to AVIF free?

Yes, this HEIC to AVIF converter is completely free with no limits. You can convert as many files as you need without registration or watermarks.

Does the converter upload my files to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to AVIF?

Yes, AVIF from this converter is saved lossy, at the quality set by the Set AVIF quality slider (default 80 percent). At that value the difference is invisible on screen, while at 60 percent fine detail starts to blur. The encoder has no lossless mode.

Can I add transparency when converting HEIC to AVIF?

AVIF stores an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the HEIC file stay unchanged in the result.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes, the converter supports batch conversion. You can add multiple HEIC files and convert them all to AVIF simultaneously. Use the batch download option to save all converted files at once.

Why can't I open HEIC files on my Windows PC?

HEIC is Apple's proprietary image format used by iPhones and iPads. Windows doesn't natively support HEIC without additional codecs. Converting HEIC to AVIF solves this compatibility issue, allowing you to view and share your photos on any device.

Do all browsers support AVIF?

Yes, in current versions: Chrome from 85, Firefox from 93, Safari from 16.1 and Edge from 121. An older browser shows nothing in place of an AVIF image, so a page that has to serve them keeps a JPG or WebP fallback.

What is the maximum file size?

Each file may be up to 100 MB; a larger one stops on the list with a message that it is too large. The number of files in the queue is not limited, and large images take longer because the browser decodes them fully into memory.

How do I download all files at once?

The Download all button packs the finished files into one ZIP archive named heic-avif.zip. With a single finished file no archive is made and the file downloads directly.
