Why convert PNG to AVIF?
PNG is a lossless format that produces large files — ideal for editing but heavy for web delivery. AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) delivers dramatically better compression: files are typically 50–80% smaller than PNG while maintaining excellent visual quality with support for transparency.
AVIF supports millions of colors, full alpha transparency, HDR, and both lossy and lossless modes. It is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 121+. Converting PNG to AVIF is one of the most effective ways to optimize website performance.
AVIF uses lossy compression by default — at high quality settings, the difference from the original PNG is imperceptible to the human eye. For pixel-perfect archival copies, keep the original PNG.
All processing happens locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. No registration, no limits, no watermarks.
If you need the other direction, for instance to open an AVIF file in a program that only knows the older formats, the AVIF to PNG converter writes the same image back losslessly.
How to convert PNG to AVIF
Upload your PNG file
Drag and drop your PNG image onto the converter area or click to browse your device. You can add multiple files at once for batch conversion.Set the quality
The Set AVIF quality slider takes values from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. A lower value gives a lighter file, a higher one keeps more detail. Then click Convert.Download AVIF
The Download button next to a file saves it on its own, and Download all packs all finished files into one ZIP archive. With a single finished file no archive is made, the file downloads directly.
When should you convert PNG to AVIF?
Website optimization
PNG files are large — a single screenshot can be 2–10 MB. Converting to AVIF reduces file size by 50–80% while preserving transparency. This dramatically improves page load times and Core Web Vitals.Every recipient has to open the file
Email clients and older graphics programs do not display AVIF files yet. For a photo going by email or into such a program use the PNG to JPG converter.Online shop
Product galleries and thumbnails in AVIF load faster, and the transparent background of a packshot stays in the file. The file is still going back for editing
Every further save in a lossy format removes some detail. When the image is still going into an editor, keep the original PNG file and convert only the final version.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting PNG to AVIF?
The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.
- 80% (default) – a good balance for most use cases: web graphics, screenshots, blog images. The visual difference compared to lossless PNG is virtually unnoticeable.
- 85–90% – for product photography and detailed graphics where quality matters most.
- 60–70% – when minimizing file size is the priority, e.g. thumbnails or background images.
At 80% quality, AVIF typically reduces PNG file size by 60–80% while maintaining visual quality that is indistinguishable from the original to the human eye.

Frequently asked questions about PNG to AVIF conversion
Is converting PNG to AVIF free?
Yes, this PNG to AVIF converter is completely free with no limits. You can convert as many files as you need without registration or watermarks.
Does the converter upload my files to a server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.
Will I lose quality when converting PNG to AVIF?
Yes, AVIF from this converter is saved lossy, at the quality set by the Set AVIF quality slider (default 80 percent). At that value the difference is invisible on screen, while at 60 percent fine detail starts to blur. The encoder has no lossless mode.
Can I convert multiple PNG files at once?
Yes, the converter supports batch conversion. You can add multiple PNG files and convert them all to AVIF simultaneously. Use the batch download option to save all converted files at once.
Do all browsers support AVIF?
Yes, in current versions: Chrome from 85, Firefox from 93, Safari from 16.1 and Edge from 121. An older browser shows nothing in place of an AVIF image, so a page that has to serve them keeps a JPG or WebP fallback.
What is the maximum file size?
Each file may be up to 100 MB; a larger one stops on the list with a message that it is too large. The number of files in the queue is not limited, and large images take longer because the browser decodes them fully into memory.
Does the converter work on mobile devices?
Yes, the converter works on any device with a modern web browser, including smartphones and tablets. The interface adapts to your screen size for a comfortable experience on any device.
How do I download all files at once?
The Download all button packs the finished files into one ZIP archive named png-avif.zip. With a single finished file no archive is made and the file downloads directly.
