Why convert WebP to AVIF?

AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and excels particularly at low bitrates — where WebP may show visible artifacts, AVIF maintains clean details.

AVIF is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 121+. If you already serve WebP images and want even smaller files, converting to AVIF is the next optimization step. Use the HTML <picture> element to serve AVIF with WebP as a fallback.

AVIF encoding is more computationally intensive than WebP, so conversion may take slightly longer for large images. The resulting files, however, are significantly smaller.

How much does a file weigh before and after WebP to AVIF conversion?

We ran 8 WebP files through this converter at the default quality of 80 percent: two Unsplash photos at different resolutions, a product photo, a leaf macro, a real screenshot with text, a logo and an icon with a transparent background, and a text page at scanner resolution. Weights are given exactly as the tool prints them in the queue: in kilobytes and megabytes of 1,024 bytes, with the same rounding. We took the measurement ourselves on 11 September 2026 in a Chromium browser; the result depends on the image content, so your file may come out differently.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting WebP to AVIF?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

80% (default) – a good balance for most use cases.
85–90% – for content where visual fidelity is critical, e.g. product photography and portfolios.
