Is PNG suitable for a web page?

Not for publishing on the web. The test photo grew from 638.3 KB to 3.98 MB, because PNG stores every pixel without loss. For a web page keep WebP or save the image as WebP or AVIF, because those formats give the lightest files in a browser.

PNG makes sense where lossless storage and transparency matters: further editing in a graphics program, graphics with text and sharp edges, office documents.

Tips for converting WebP to PNG

A few tips to help you avoid common issues during conversion:

Very large files
Converting images above 4000×4000 pixels may be slower and strain the browser. If processing many large files, consider splitting them into batches of 10–20.
The file will grow
PNG stores every pixel without loss, so a photo in WebP gives a file several times larger: our test photo grew from 638.3 KB to 3.98 MB. That is normal; for the web keep WebP.
Transparency
PNG stores an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the WebP file stay unchanged in the result.
Keep the originals
Converting to PNG does not recover detail lost earlier in WebP, and the resulting file is larger. Keep the original if the image is going back to a web page.

How much does a file weigh after converting WebP to PNG?

Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. PNG stores every pixel without loss, so the size depends on the amount of detail, not on the source format: the photo grows the most, the simple icon the least.

What to expect when converting WebP to PNG?

WebP can use either lossy or lossless compression, while PNG is always lossless. The conversion decodes the WebP data and saves every pixel exactly as-is in PNG format. No additional quality loss occurs.

PNG files will be larger than the original WebP — typically 2–5× larger depending on image content. This is expected because PNG uses less aggressive (but lossless) Deflate compression.
