At quality 85–90, JPG produces visually identical results to PNG for photographic content while being dramatically smaller. Note that JPG does not support transparency — transparent areas in your PNG will be filled with a solid background color (typically white). If you need transparency, keep your files as PNG or convert to WebP instead.

Tips for choosing the right JPG quality

The ideal JPG quality setting depends on what you plan to do with the image:

90–95% – Archival or print. Minimal compression, maximum visual fidelity.
80–85% – General use (web, email, social media). The best balance of size and quality.
60–75% – Thumbnails or previews where file size matters more than detail.

How much does a file weigh after converting PNG to JPG?

Three test files went through this converter at the default settings, that is at 85 percent quality: a photo of 1280 × 1659 pixels, a screenshot of 1920 × 1060 pixels and a 512 × 512 pixel icon with a transparent background. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024, with the same rounding.

Our own measurement from 6 September 2026 in a Chromium-based browser. Your result depends on the image content: a photo full of detail comes out heavier than flat graphics, and JPG fills the transparent background of the icon with white.

How converting PNG to JPG affects page speed

Image weight drives the LCP metric (Largest Contentful Paint), the time until the largest element on the screen appears. On many pages that element is the header photo or a product photo. In our measurement the test photo weighed 3.90 MB in PNG and 719.6 KB in JPG, that is 5.6 times smaller.

Format is one of two levers, the other is dimensions. A photo straight from the camera is 6000 pixels wide while a page column shows 800 of them, so scale it to the target width before converting. The PageSpeed Insights report, Performance section, shows which images weigh a page down.

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce image quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so some quality loss is inevitable. At 80–85% quality the difference is virtually invisible to the naked eye. The tool lets you set quality from 60% to 95% so you can find the right balance.

What happens to PNG transparency?
