Why convert JPG to AVIF?

JPG has been the standard photo format for decades, but AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) delivers 30–50% better compression at equivalent visual quality. AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and excels at preserving fine details and smooth gradients even at very low file sizes.

AVIF supports millions of colors, alpha transparency, HDR content, and both lossy and lossless modes. It is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 121+. Converting JPG to AVIF is one of the most impactful optimizations for website performance.

Google PageSpeed Insights specifically recommends serving images in next-gen formats like AVIF. Use the HTML <picture> element to serve AVIF with JPG as a fallback for older browsers.

All processing happens locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. No registration, no limits, no watermarks.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

  1. Upload your JPG file

Drag and drop your JPG image onto the converter area or click to browse your device. You can add multiple files at once for batch conversion.
  2. Set the quality

The Set AVIF quality slider takes values from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. A lower value gives a lighter file, a higher one keeps more detail. Then click Convert.
  3. Download AVIF

The Download button next to a file saves it on its own, and Download all packs all finished files into one ZIP archive. With a single finished file no archive is made, the file downloads directly.

When should you convert JPG to AVIF?

  1. Website optimization

AVIF files are 30–50% smaller than JPG at equivalent visual quality. Converting your JPG images to AVIF is one of the most impactful optimizations for website performance and Core Web Vitals scores.
  2. Every recipient has to open the file

Email clients and older graphics programs do not display AVIF files yet. For email or such a program keep the original JPG.
  3. Online shop

Product galleries and thumbnails in AVIF load faster, and the transparent background of a packshot stays in the file.
  4. The file is still going back for editing

Every further save in a lossy format removes some detail. When the image is still going into an editor, keep the original JPG file and convert only the final version.

What makes this JPG to AVIF converter different?

  1. Complete privacy

Your JPG files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server – your images stay on your device at all times.
  2. Many files at once

Add any number of JPG files, each up to 100 MB. The converter processes them one by one and shows the status of each.
  3. Quality slider

The Set AVIF quality slider from 60 to 95 percent, default 80. Next to every file you see the size before and after conversion, and under the list the total for the whole queue.
  4. Download in one archive

The Download all button packs all finished files into one ZIP archive, so you do not have to approve a dozen downloads one after another.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting JPG to AVIF?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

  • 80% (default) – a good balance for most use cases: business websites, blogs, articles. The visual difference compared to the original JPG is virtually unnoticeable.
  • 85–90% – for product photography, portfolios, and galleries where every detail matters.
  • 60–70% – when minimizing file size is the priority, e.g. thumbnails in category grids.

At 80% quality, AVIF typically produces files 30–50% smaller than the original JPG while maintaining visual quality indistinguishable to the human eye.

How much does a file weigh after converting JPG to AVIF?

Three test files went through this converter at the default settings, that is at 80 percent quality: a photo of 1280 × 1659 pixels, a screenshot of 1920 × 1060 pixels and a 512 × 512 pixel icon with a transparent background. Sizes are given exactly as the tool counts them: kilobytes and megabytes of 1024, with the same rounding.

Frequently asked questions about JPG to AVIF conversion

Is converting JPG to AVIF free?

Yes, this JPG to AVIF converter is completely free with no limits. You can convert as many files as you need without registration or watermarks.

Does the converter upload my files to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

Will I lose quality when converting JPG to AVIF?

Yes, AVIF from this converter is saved lossy, at the quality set by the Set AVIF quality slider (default 80 percent). At that value the difference is invisible on screen, while at 60 percent fine detail starts to blur. The encoder has no lossless mode.

Can I add transparency when converting JPG to AVIF?

JPG does not store transparency, so the resulting AVIF file is fully opaque, although the AVIF format itself supports an alpha channel.

Can I convert multiple JPG files at once?

Yes, the converter supports batch conversion. You can add multiple JPG files and convert them all to AVIF simultaneously. Use the batch download option to save all converted files at once.

Do all browsers support AVIF?

Yes, in current versions: Chrome from 85, Firefox from 93, Safari from 16.1 and Edge from 121. An older browser shows nothing in place of an AVIF image, so a page that has to serve them keeps a JPG or WebP fallback.

What is the maximum file size?

Each file may be up to 100 MB; a larger one stops on the list with a message that it is too large. The number of files in the queue is not limited, and large images take longer because the browser decodes them fully into memory.

Does the converter work on mobile devices?

Yes, the converter works on any device with a modern web browser, including smartphones and tablets. The interface adapts to your screen size for a comfortable experience on any device.

How do I download all files at once?

The Download all button packs the finished files into one ZIP archive named jpg-avif.zip. With a single finished file no archive is made and the file downloads directly.
