How much does a file weigh before and after JPG to AVIF conversion?

We ran 8 JPG files through this converter at the default quality of 80 percent: two Unsplash photos at different resolutions, a product photo, a leaf macro, a real screenshot with text, a logo and an icon with a transparent background, and a text page at scanner resolution. Weights are given exactly as the tool prints them in the queue: in kilobytes and megabytes of 1,024 bytes, with the same rounding. We took the measurement ourselves on 11 September 2026 in a Chromium browser; the result depends on the image content, so your file may come out differently.

Quality settings – what to choose when converting JPG to AVIF?

The quality slider lets you set a value from 60% to 95%. Higher values mean better image quality but larger file sizes.

80% (default) – a good balance for most use cases: business websites, blogs, articles. The visual difference compared to the original JPG is virtually unnoticeable.
85–90% – for product photography, portfolios, and galleries where every detail matters.
