Convert pebibytes to petabytes
1 PiB is 1.125899906842624 PB, because a pebibyte holds 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes and a petabyte a flat quadrillion. Type the pebibytes from a system report, a command's output or a documented limit, and the converter gives them in petabytes, the unit hardware makers use.
How many petabytes are in a pebibyte?
A pebibyte is 1024 × 1024 × 1024 × 1024 × 1024 bytes, or 250 = 1,125,899,906,842,624 B, while a petabyte is a flat quadrillion bytes[1]. A pebibyte is therefore 1.125899906842624 PB, 12.59% more than a petabyte.
A symbol with an “i”, such as PiB, always means a power of two. The plain PB symbol, however, turns up for both values, so check how the author counts before you use a figure from a report or a manual. Petabytes go the other way in the PB to PiB converter, and tebibytes in the TiB to TB converter.

How do you convert PiB to PB? Formula and Excel
Multiply the pebibytes by 250 to get bytes, then divide by a quadrillion. In short:
- PB = PiB × 1,125,899,906,842,624 ÷ 1015,
- PB = PiB × 1.125899906842624.
A pool that a system reports as 16 PiB therefore holds 18.014398509482 PB, more than 18 PB in the units of a hardware quote.
In Excel, type =CONVERT(A2,"Pibyte","Pbyte"). Excel reads the prefix “Pi” as 250 and “P” as a quadrillion[2].
Universities report storage in pebibytes too. The University of Sheffield gives the capacity of the Lustre fastdata area on its Stanage cluster as 2 PiB[3], which is 2.251799813685248 PB.

How many petabytes is the largest NTFS volume?
Microsoft states that on Windows Server 2019 and later, and on Windows 10 version 1709 and later, an NTFS volume can be as large as 8 PB. The limit depends on the cluster size and on the number of clusters, which can be at most 232 – 1[4].
Microsoft's table counts in powers of two. A 4 KB cluster times 232 clusters gives 16 TiB, which the table writes as 16 TB. In the same way, the 8 PB for a 2048 KB cluster is 253 bytes, or 8 PiB, which is 9.007 PB in decimal petabytes.
What are the NTFS volume limits in pebibytes and petabytes?
| Cluster size | In Microsoft's table | In pebibytes | In petabytes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256 KB | 1 PB | 1 PiB | 1.125899906842624 PB |
| 512 KB | 2 PB | 2 PiB | 2.251799813685248 PB |
| 1024 KB | 4 PB | 4 PiB | 4.5035996273705 PB |
| 2048 KB | 8 PB | 8 PiB | 9.00719925474099 PB |
What number formats does this converter accept?
| What you type | What the converter shows | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 | 1.688849860263936 PB | A dot before the last digit is a decimal point, so the field holds one and a half pebibytes |
| 1,5 | 1.688849860263936 PB | A comma before a single digit is a decimal comma, as in much of Europe, so the result matches 1.5 |
| 1,500 | 1688.849860263936 PB | A comma before three digits separates thousands, so we count one thousand five hundred pebibytes. A hint under the field shows how to type 1.5 instead. |
| 1.500 | 1.688849860263936 PB | A single dot is always read as a decimal point, so we count one and a half pebibytes. Because many countries write thousands with a dot, a hint under the field shows that one thousand five hundred is typed as 1500. |
| 8 PiB | 9.00719925474099 PB | The PiB symbol after the number is ignored, so you can paste a value together with its unit |
| 8.0P | 9.00719925474099 PB | This is how df -h prints a size, and its letter P means pebibyte, so we count 8 PiB |
| 910Ti | 1.00055558127616 PB | The prefix Ti without a B always means tebibytes, so 910 TiB is rewritten in the field as 0.888672 PiB, while the result comes from the exact value. It is almost exactly 1 PB |
| 1024 TiB | 1.125899906842624 PB | Tebibytes pasted into the pebibytes field are rewritten as 1 PiB, with a note under the field |
| 512 TiB | 0.562949953421312 PB | Tebibytes pasted into the field are rewritten as 0.5 PiB and then converted to petabytes |
| 1 PB | 1 PB | Petabytes pasted into the pebibytes field are rewritten as 0.888178 PiB, and the result uses the exact value, so it comes back as 1 PB |
| 2½ | 2.81474976710656 PB | A ½ sign copied from text is added to the number in front of it |
| 1e3 | 1125.899906842624 PB | Scientific notation from a spreadsheet is read directly: 1e3 is a thousand pebibytes |

Frequently asked questions about pebibytes and petabytes
What does the letter P mean in df -h output?
Pebibyte. With the -h option, df prints sizes in powers of 1024, and the letters K, M, G, T and P stand for KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB and PiB[5]. The -H option prints powers of 1000 instead.
How many pebibytes are in 1 PB?
There are 0.8882 PiB in a petabyte, because the petabyte is the smaller unit. The PB to PiB converter gives the values for other capacities.
